Soundtrack Watch: New Bond from La-La Land, A ‘Rocky II’ Knockout, More ‘Mario,’ Plus Intrada, Varese & Quartet

Spring is in the air, making now the perfect time to check out some killer recent archival soundtracks released by our friends at La-La Land Records, Intrada, Quartet and Varese Sarabande – plus a great recent score with some deep musical history that felt worth sharing, too.
La-La Land shone brightly with new releases in March and April, most notably their latest restoration of a James Bond film score! This time, it’s John Barry’s music to Diamonds Are Forever, the seventh film in the long-running spy series based on Ian Fleming’s novels. For the sixth and last outing with Sean Connery as 007 (who sat out the previous film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Bond sets out to Las Vegas on the trail of a diamond smuggling ring tied to his longtime enemy, the fiendish SPECTRE mastermind Ernst Stavro Blofeld (this time played by Charles Grey). Composer John Barry’s as-yet unbroken streak of scores in the series was punctuated by a title song with lyrics by Don Black, featuring vocals from Shirley Bassey, who’d also sung the title tune to Goldfinger. LLL’s brilliant 2CD set features the original score as presented in the film (sourced from 1″ eight-track analog master tapes), alongside several alternates, plus a remaster of the original soundtrack album (freshly edited from the exact takes and sequence to match while sounding fresh) and other extras, including Bassey singing the theme in Italian! The usual 007 dream team contributes: producer Neil S. Bulk, mixing engineer Chris Malone, mastering engineer Doug Schwartz, package designer Dan Goldwasser (with a cover designed by Jim Titus) and liner notes by Bond music authority Jon Burlingame. These Diamonds shine 5000 copies strong, available through the label or the official 007 webstore for 90 days before selling at other film score retailers.

LLL’s next new title is a new expansion of Jerry Fielding’s score to the 1976 sports comedy The Bad News Bears, celebrating its 50th anniversary. This oddball feature starred Walter Matthau as a down-and-out, drunk, ex-minor league baseball pitcher who makes a living (and a little bit more) whipping a team of misfit youth ball players into shape. With some eye-popping youth profanity and star turns from recent Oscar winner Tatum O’Neal as the Bears’ tomboy pitcher and Jackie Earle Haley as the team’s bad-boy fielder, the film was a critical and commercial success, and yielded this fan favorite score by composer Fielding (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs). Utilizing pieces from Bizet’s acclaimed opera Carmen, it’s a musical comedy home run, brought to life like never before and expanded beyond a previous release as part of a box set along with the scores to its two sequels. Dan Goldwasser produces and handles package design (including the unforgettable poster by MAD caricaturist Jack Davis), Doug Schwartz masters and associate producer John Takis offers liner notes; the disc is limited to just 1000 copies.

March saw two action-packed scores from LLL: the music to the first two films in the Bad Boys franchise, composed respectively by Mark Mancina and Yes’ Trevor Rabin (each aided by additional composers including Nick Glennie-Smith, Steve Jablonsky, Harry Gregson-Williams and others). The films, directed by music video maven Michael Bay (making his big screen debut with the 1995 original) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, starred former rapper-turned-TV star Will Smith and comedian Martin Lawrence as unlikely but devoted partners on the Miami police force, whose investigations tend to turn explosive. (The duo starred in a further two Bad Boys films in 2020 and 2024, neither of which were directed by Bay.) Both films’ scores set a template for how action films would sound on film for the next few decades, and they’re brought to life in full color on these 2CD limited editions. (La-La Land previously released part of the Bad Boys score in 2007, featuring only parts of the score from various sources; the new edition bests it with a new remix from uncovered 32-track digital masters in stereo, while the similarly impressive sound on Bad Boys II represents the score’s first official release anywhere). Both are produced by Stephane Humez and mixed and mastered by Maxime Marion, with Kaya Savas penning liner notes for each in packages designed by Dan Goldwasser. Bad Boys tops out at 3000 copies while its sequel caps at 2000.

Over at Intrada, they’re starting April with an incredible knockout: a new expanded edition of Bill Conti’s score to Rocky II. Sylvester Stallone’s iconic Philadelphia boxer appeared in a six film arc between 1976 and 2006 (plus two spin-offs in the Creed trilogy, developed by filmmaker Ryan Coogler). With the original Rocky turning 50 in 2026 – Stallone is prepping a memoir this fall about the film’s production, and an unrelated biopic covering the same territory is slated for release later this year – the time seems right to revisit these legendary scores. (Conti penned music to all but 1985’s Rocky IV; Vince DiCola’s synth-driven interpretation of those themes were previously issued by Intrada in 2010.) Rocky II (the series’ first to be directed as well as written by Stallone) follows the Italian Stallion in the year after his life-changing title shot against world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). Though happily married to his sweetheart Adrian (Talia Shire), Rocky Balboa is caught between retiring from fighting for health reasons and an inability to acclimate to other jobs. Adding to the pressure is a rematch challenge from Creed, who wants to prove that Balboa’s slim loss by decision was a fluke, and sudden health challenges for Adrian as she prepares to welcome their son.
Conti reprised the classic themes he wrote for the first film (including “Gonna Fly Now,” an unlikely, mostly-instrumental film theme that topped the Billboard Hot 100) as well as adding new variations and ideas, from the “Fly” restructure “Redemption” to a new romantic theme, “All of My Life” (once again featuring vocals from DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford, who sang on the Rocky soundtrack). Some of the film’s cues were in fact re-recordings of things that had been heard in the first film, making this expanded edition somewhat challenging. Producer Neil S. Bulk discusses in the package’s tech notes that only two 1/4″ inch reels were located for the score in the MGM vaults, featuring new and unused cues in stereo and matching the takes heard in the final film. While not complete, it’ll still promise to pack a punch, especially accompanied by the newly-remastered original soundtrack album as a bonus. Here’s hoping Conti’s other Rocky scores fly…if not “now,” then hopefully soon!

Intrada’s other recent title is a bit of an oddity: the score to Bug, a distinctive horror film that was the last produced and co-written by William Castle, master of cinematic shocks and theatrical gimmicks like the buzzers attached to seats used in the climax of 1959’s The Tingler. For this film about a freak swarm of hybrid, psychic cockroaches, Castle insured the film’s star, a roach named “Hercules,” for some $250,000. (The picture was an early transition to feature film for French director Jeannot Szwarc, who’d later direct JAWS 2 and Somewhere in Time.) For Bug, Charles Fox was hired to create something that sounded nothing like his lively TV themes like Happy Days and The Love Boat or pop favorites like “Killing Me Softly with His Song”; the atonal score, created entirely on Moog synthesizers, is a suspenseful if challenging listen on its own. (Fox himself, 85 years old as of this writing, jokingly warned the label that “there should be an advisory with the score that it not be played at a dinner party.”) Goldwasser again produces, with Doug Schwartz handling mastering, and Daniel Schweiger penning liner notes.

Meanwhile, over at Varese Sarabande, plenty has also been brewing. Writer-artist-comic book legend Frank Miller (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Daredevil: Born Again) introduced the dark noir Sin City in the pages of Dark Horse Comics’ Fifth Anniversary Special in 1991; he subsequently explored the denizens of Basin City (Sin City for short) in various miniseries and one-shots. In 2005, Miller and co-director Robert Rodriguez brought Marv, Dwight, Nancy, Detective Hartigan, and co. to the big screen in the 2005 anthology film Sin City starring Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, and Bruce Willis. Rodriguez composed the score to the “That Yellow Bastard” segment, with John Debney scoring “The Big Fat Kill” and Graeme Revell handling “The Hard Goodbye.” Now, Varese has expanded the original 2005 album presentation with a second disc of the original film mixes under the supervision of executive producer Rodriguez. The original album also premieres on vinyl in a translucent red edition though that has already sold out from the Varese webstore.

Our friends at the Spanish label Quartet Records have teamed with Paramount Pictures to expand composer Howard Shore’s original soundtrack to Cop Land. The film from writer-director James Mangold (Logan, A Complete Unknown) starred Sylvester Stallone, Ray Liotta, and Robert DeNiro and found Stallone as a local New Jersey sheriff confronting corruption in the NYPD. Milan Records first issued the soundtrack album in 1997 but it was severely truncated. Quartet’s expanded edition restores previously unreleased cues such as Shore’s end credits music (“Back to Work”) and adds loads of alternate takes as well as the remastered original album with its unique takes and mixes. (The film’s re-editing process at the studio’s behest led Shore to rewrite and adapt portions of his score, leading to the alternative versions premiering here.) Jeff Bond has penned the new liner notes for this edition produced by Dan Goldwasser, mixed and mastered by Chris Malone, and supervised and approved by Howard Shore

Last but not least: As of this writing, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the highest-grossing film of 2026 (though the newly-released biopic Michael (as in Jackson!) continues to break records of its own). Iam8bit and Back Lot Music have paired to bring composer Brian Tyler’s score to the video game sequel starring Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Yoshi (Donald Glover), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and the rest to 2CD, 2LP, and cassette formats. Tyler also scored 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie for directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic; Super Mario Galaxy has gotten the band back together for another rousing adventure and bright score to be enjoyed by kids of all ages.
