When The Weather Is High: Mungo Jerry's "Electronically Tested" Returns from 7a Records on CD, LP

July 16, 2024 By The Second Disc Leave a Comment

Mungo Jerry Electronically Tested

The summer of 1970 was the summer of Mungo Jerry.  The British band's catchy "In the Summertime" began a seven-week stay atop the U.K. Singles Chart, while in the U.S., Mungomania propelled the tune to No. 1 on Record World and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Now, 7a Records is preparing for another wave of Mungomania with the well-timed release on July 19 of the band's 1971 album Electronically Tested in newly remastered and expanded editions on both CD and LP. With its mélange of varied

In Memoriam: Intrada Founder Douglass Fake (1952-2024)

July 16, 2024 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

Douglass Fake

Douglass Fake, a film score champion who produced hundreds of archival soundtrack releases and reissues as the founder of Intrada Records, has died at 72 after an extended illness. There is no better primer on his life and work than can be read at the label's official site, courtesy of Joe Sikoryak, one of the label's longtime designers. When anyone of note passes away, and that outpouring of condolences and memories flows like a river, it can be easy to take a step back and investigate the

Soundtrack Watch: Intrada Heats Up 'Backdraft,' Kickstarts 'Abbott and Costello' Recording; La-La Land Expands 'Last Action Hero' and 'Heavy Metal'

July 12, 2024 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Last Action Hero

Leave it to Intrada and La-La Land to cook up some appropriately blazing soundtrack reissues in recent weeks! Intrada has expanded an early classic by Hans Zimmer, bowed a selection of re-recordings of TV work by Jerry Goldsmith, and is prepping another re-recording project to crowdfund; meanwhile, La-La Land (in addition to releasing the only John Williams score to a Steven Spielberg film without a soundtrack) has expansions of works by Elmer Bernstein and Michael Kamen. Quite the selection of

Review: Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, "Whisky a Go Go 1968"

July 12, 2024 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Zappa Whisky 1968

Frank Zappa didn't open his first set on the evening of July 23, 1968 at Hollywood's Whisky a Go Go with a power chord or a blues beat.  Instead, the band - Ray Collins (vocals, percussion), Ian Underwood (alto sax), Bunk Gardner (tenor sax, flute), Don Preston (keyboards, gong), Motorhead Sherwood (baritone sax, percussion), Roy Estrada (bass, vocals), Art Tripp (drum set, percussion), and Jimmy Carl Black (drum set, percussion) - opened with a clattering improvisation that was sure to separate

Can't Turn Back the Decks: Phil Collins' 'Both Sides' Gets Deluxe Vinyl Set

July 11, 2024 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Both Sides All the Sides packshot

When Phil Collins started his deluxe reissue campaign in 2016, he started from both an obvious place and a less obvious one, first expanding 1981 debut Face Value as well as 1993's Both Sides, his fifth album. Now, that latter release - clearly, one of Collins' own favorites in his catalog - is being celebrated this fall with two vinyl products. Rhino will release Both Sides (All the Sides), a 5LP box set featuring the original album, demos, B-sides and live cuts, on September 20. They'll

Forever Young: Bob Dylan and The Band's Complete 1974 Live Recordings Collected on Massive Box

July 9, 2024 By Joe Marchese 13 Comments

Bob Dylan and The Band 1974 Live Recordings

Bob Dylan had come a long way from coffeehouses.  In 1974, the superstar singer-songwriter embarked on an extensive tour with his old backing band.  Now, they, too, were universally known - as The Band - and the double bill hit indoor arenas across North America for 40 concerts over 30 dates and 21 cities.  The tour became one of the largest and highest-profile of the era, in no small part due to the promotional efforts of David Geffen, who'd spurred on the talks and had recently lured Dylan

Faithful was produced by the legendary Jeff Barry ("Chapel of Love," "Leader of the Pack," "Sugar, Sugar") for Springfield in 1971.  From his home base

June 27, 2024 By The Second Disc 2 Comments

Two Tons o' Fun Get the Feeling

Before they achieved stardom the world over with "It's Raining Men," Weather Girls Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes Armstead made waves in the thriving San Francisco music scene as Two Tons o' Fun (and, later, The Two Tons).  The powerhouse duo began working with gender- and genre-defying artist Sylvester at Fantasy Records, singing background and lead vocals on many of his most memorable recordings.  In 1980, they struck out on their own and teamed with legendary Motown veteran Harvey Fuqua (who

June 25, 2024 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Les Cousins

"For two-and-a-half years, I had the Friday night show at Bunjies Coffee Bar, and it became a residency for me," Al Stewart remembered in an interview with this author for the recent collection of his U.S. singles.  "After a while, I got another residency right around the corner at a club called Les Cousins."  The Greek Street venue was a focal point of the London folk scene.  Nick Drake, Cat Stevens, Alexis Korner, John Renbourn, and a young American named Paul Simon all passed through its

Poppins packshot

When Richard M. Sherman, one half of the legendary songwriting team The Sherman Brothers, passed away last month, The Second Disc was quick to pay tribute to all the duo's great works for Walt Disney films and elsewhere. But their most towering achievement is probably the song score to the whimsical Mary Poppins. This summer, to celebrate the film's 60th anniversary, Disney will release a limited edition vinyl box set collecting the film's original soundtrack, rare archival material and no less

I'm with the Band: Country Vocal Group Little Big Town Plans Greatest Hits Album Ahead of New Tour

June 20, 2024 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Streaming might have rendered the greatest hits album a comparative rarity in today's discographies, but country quartet Little Big Town are bucking the trend, planning a new collection of popular singles (and a few re-recordings) ahead of a tour this fall. The Alabama foursome, comprised of singers Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook (all of whom perform in rich harmony, with no de facto lead singer), have been together for 25 years, but started to take off

JD Souther You're Only Lonely

Michigan-born, Texas-raised John David Souther was one of the first artists signed to David Geffen and Elliot Roberts' groundbreaking Asylum label in 1971.  His two albums for Asylum, John David Souther (1972) and Black Rose (1976), established the singer-songwriter's distinctive voice on such now-classic songs as "Faithless Love," "How Long," and "Simple Man, Simple Dream."  In 1979, Souther moved over to the Columbia label where he scored a chart-topping hit with the title track of You're Only

Country Survivor: Iconoclassic Preps Another Unreleased Jimi Jamison Album, in a Different Genre

June 18, 2024 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

Jimmy Wayne Jamison

Iconoclassic Records will celebrate the life of former Survivor and melodic rock singer Jimi Jamison with its second release of previously unreleased material this summer: a country-flavored recording from 2007, entitled Jimmy Wayne Jamison. For much of rock band Survivor's tenure - particularly a stellar run from 1984 to 1989 - Jimi Jamison was its voice: melodic and expressive, bringing gravitas and tenderness to pop hits like "I Can't Hold Back," "High on You," "The Search is Over,"

Promised Land: 'Memphis' Box Set Celebrates Elvis' Connection to a Legendary Rock City

June 17, 2024 By Mike Duquette 7 Comments

Elvis Memphis box 2024

On July 18, 1953, an 18-year-old truck driver from Tupelo, Mississippi named Elvis Presley walked into the Memphis Recording Service at Sun Records. He paid $3.98 to record a double-sided acetate, allegedly a belated birthday gift for his mother. Thus began not only an incredible singing career that changed the edifices of popular music, but a relationship with Tennessee's second most-populous city - one that would last the rest of his life. This summer, a new box set from Legacy Recordings will

Road to 'Sugarland': La-La Land Records Premieres John Williams' First Score for a Steven Spielberg Film

The Sugarland Express

Legendary composer John Williams' personal and professional relationship with director Steven Spielberg has yielded 30 film scores, including Oscar-winning soundtracks to JAWS (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Schindler's List (1993), three of Williams' five Academy Award wins in a career that's seen more nominations than anyone currently alive and only less total than Walt Disney. But Williams' first score in Spielberg's filmography was fairly infamous among collectors and fans as

Kid in the Street: Justin Townes Earle Memorialized on Forthcoming Rarities Set

June 13, 2024 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Justin Townes Earle All In

The Americana world was shaken in 2020 by the death of Justin Townes Earle, the talented country/folk/blues musician following in the footsteps of his father, alt-country hero Steve Earle. His songs were rich in guitar, organ and horns (the first two of which he'd played in his father's band) and featured evocative, personal lyrics inspired by his own personal demons and the stark realities of life in general. His last album, 2019's The Saint of Lost Causes, was an affecting critique of the
