October 9, 2015 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Labi Siffre

Despite a relatively small catalogue of under ten albums in over forty years, British singer-songwriter Labi Siffre has long been recognized as one of the most original voices in pop.  Artists as diverse as Rod Stewart, Madness, Joss Stone and Kenny Rogers have all recorded his songs; hip-hop performers like Kanye West and Eminem have sampled him.  Edsel has recently celebrated Siffre's legacy with a program of five reissues - expanded editions of four of his studio albums plus a new edition of

Man, We Had a Party: Ace Collects Sequel Songs On "Second Helpings"

September 30, 2015 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Second Helpings

Numerous collections have compiled famous "answer songs."  Ace Records' 2007 anthology The Answer to Everything had many of the best, like Jody Miller's "Queen of the House," Esther Phillips' "When a Woman Loves a Man" and Marilyn Michaels' "Tell Tommy I Miss Him."  Early in the summer, Ace took a look not at answer songs, per se, but at sequel songs, on the compilation of Second Helpings: Sequels to the Songs That Left 'Em Hungry for More! The 24 tracks on this collection all hail from the

Wicked Good: Wilson Pickett's "Complete RCA" Arrives TOMORROW From Second Disc Records!

September 3, 2015 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Wilson Pickett Mr. Magic Man

This Friday, Second Disc Records and Real Gone Music continue the story of one of soul music's leading lights.  The late Wilson Pickett (1941-2006) lived life - and made music - on strictly his own terms.  Everybody knows the story of The Wicked Pickett's groundbreaking tenure at Atlantic Records during which time he largely defined the sound of sixties soul.  Hits such as "In the Midnight Hour," "Land of 1,000 Dances," "Mustang Sally" and "Funky Broadway" all still cornerstones of any classic

Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Danny Seraphine, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Walter Parazaider - released its first album on Columbia Records.  46 years and a total of 36 core albums later, the band simply known as Chicago is still intact with Lamm, Loughnane, Pankow and Parazaider.  In the waning days of 1971, another band made its first appearance on records.  America - the trio of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek -

EXCLUSIVE! It's Yesterday Once More: Carpenters "Complete Singles" Released For Public Television

August 24, 2015 By Joe Marchese 28 Comments

Carpenters Complete Singles cover low res reference

On November 5, 1969, the very first single by Carpenters was released on A&M Records.  "Ticket to Ride" b/w "Your Wonderful Parade" announced the fresh talents of Richard Carpenter, 23, and Karen Carpenter, 19.  The dramatically reinterpreted Beatles song introduced radio to Karen's richly intimate voice, and the bitingly ironic flipside heralded the songwriting team of Richard Carpenter and John Bettis  - while both sides revealed Richard's prodigious gifts for arrangement

Review: Various Artists, "Here Today! The Songs of Brian Wilson"

August 3, 2015 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Here Today The Songs of Brian Wilson

The title of Ace Records' recent collection is Here Today! The Songs of Brian Wilson, after one of those famous Wilson songs off The Beach Boys' 1966 Pet Sounds.  But the fact of the matter is - as this enjoyably diverse set proves over the course of its 25 tracks - Brian Wilson's music is not only here today, but will be here for many tomorrows. Unlike Ace's 2003 volume Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions, this anthology concentrates on Brian as songwriter.  But there are a couple of

completely cilla

We're deeply saddened at the news of the passing of Cilla Black, 72.  Throughout the course of a recording career spanning five decades, the Liverpool-born artist lent her distinctive sound and big voice to songs by The Beatles ("Love of the Loved," "It's for You," Step Inside Love"), Burt Bacharach and Hal David ("Alfie," "Anyone Who Had a Heart"), Randy Newman ("I've Been Wrong Before") and the greatest songwriters of her era.
