Come On: The Complete Ric and Ron Singles of New Orleans' Johnny Adams Are Collected By Ace

March 30, 2015 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Johnny Adams I Wont Cry

Of New Orleans’ many musical greats, few embodied the city’s spirited style of rhythm and blues as well as the late Johnny Adams (1932-1998).  Though he charted just six R&B hits in a career spanning 40 years, New Orleans native Adams had one of the city’s most distinctive and dramatic voices.  Ace has recently released the first-ever complete anthology of Adams’ singles for Ric and Ron Records with I Won’t Cry: The Complete Ric and Ron Singles 1959-1964. Ric and its sister label Ron were

SoulMusic Records Is Caught In Tavares' "Love Storm"

March 27, 2015 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Tavares Love Storm

Between 1974 and 1981, Tavares – brothers Ralph, Arthur (Pooch), Antone (Chubby), Feliciano (Butch) and Perry (Tiny) – recorded ten albums for Capitol Records during which time the group established itself as smooth purveyors of R&B, soul, funk and pop.  Cherry Red’s SoulMusic Records imprint has reissued six of those titles in the past, and the seventh title in the series has just arrived: 1977’s Love Storm. Love Storm, Album No. 5, was produced, like its predecessor Sky High, by Freddie

Margaret Whiting and George Shearing's "Lost Jazz Sessions" Found

March 24, 2015 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Whiting Shearing

With her straightforward, emotionally honest and vocally pristine style, it's no wonder why Margaret Whiting became one of the foremost interpreters of the body of work known today as The Great American Songbook. One of the earliest signings to Johnny Mercer's fledgling Capitol label, Whiting scored approximately 50 chart hits in the 1940s and 1950s, popularized now-standard songs including "My Funny Valentine," "It Might as Well Be Spring," "Moonlight in Vermont" and "Baby, It's Cold Outside,"

Rare Bernard Herrmann Score To "12-Mile Reef" Resurfaces On CD

March 19, 2015 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Beneath the 12 Mile Reef

Romeo and Juliet at sea? Such was the premise behind 1953’s epic adventure Beneath the 12-Mile Reef. Only the third film shot in the widescreen CinemaScope process, the Twentieth Century Fox film starred Robert Wagner and Terry Moore as the star-crossed lovers from warring families on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Adding luster to the picture was the score by Bernard Herrmann. By 1953, Herrmann was already well-known for his Oscar-winning score to The Devil and Daniel Webster and nominees Citizen Kane

Joan Rivers Next to Last Album

Shapes and Shadows

Musical renaissance man Les Reed is responsible for some of the most beloved pop tunes of all time – “It’s Not Unusual,” “There’s a Kind of Hush,” and “The Last Waltz” among them.  His songs have been recorded by Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark and Bing Crosby.  Less well known is that Reed also founded a record label.  His Chapter One Records was formed in 1968 and lasted until 1973, releasing music by a diverse collection of artists including Episode Six (a proving

January 19, 2015 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Fascinating Gershwin

When The Library of Congress established a Prize for Popular Song in 2007, one name was affixed to it: Gershwin. With no disrespect to Messrs. Berlin, Porter, Rodgers and company, George and Ira’s surname is synonymous with the gold standard in American popular song. The recipients of the award to date – Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Carole King and Billy Joel – have all followed in the Gershwins’ footsteps of marrying smart, sophisticated and incisive

November 14, 2014 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

aretha aretha

Funky Town Grooves is showing some love for the Queen of Soul. Following the label’s 2012 two-disc expansion of Aretha Franklin’s 1985 “comeback” Who’s Zoomin’ Who, December will see similar releases for two more titles plucked from her Arista catalogue: 1986’s Aretha (her second album of that name for Arista) and 1989’s Through the Storm. Aretha welcomed back producer Narada Michael Walden and yielded a number of chart hits including a rowdy take on The Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack

Variety Is The Spice: Varese Serves Up Ian Hunter, Ray Price

November 12, 2014 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Upon his departure from Mott the Hoople, frontman Ian Hunter wasted little time in establishing a solo career. His first, eponymous solo album in 1975 yielded the single that made Hunter’s name as a solo artist, the original version of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” Recorded at George Martin’s AIR Studios, “Once Bitten” boasted Hunter’s old cohort Mick Ronson as arranger, guitarist and co-producer, and the track made it all the way to No. 14 on the U.K. chart. (Great White’s 1989 cover version

A Case of Joni: Mitchell Curates New Love-Themed, Career-Spanning Box Set

October 15, 2014 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

In 2007, Joni Mitchell released her last studio album to date, Shine.  That release was her first recording since 2002’s Travelogue and first collection of new songs since 1998’s Taming the Tiger.  Over the past seven years, the influential singer-songwriter has mainly made headlines for her candid and revealing interviews, on which she’s held forth about such topics as Bob Dylan’s alleged plagiarism and her own struggles with Morgellons disease.  So it’s refreshing that Mitchell is back in the

Come See About Them: Ace Collects Rare, Unreleased Music of Motown's Contours

contours misunderstanding1

Forty years ago, in February 1974, The Contours reappeared on the Tamla Motown label with the single “Baby Hit and Run,” the group’s first release in seven years. But it was far from a new recording; the backing track had been cut in 1965 for Ivy Jo Hunter.  At least three lead vocals were cut for The Contours: by Billy Gordon later that year, and then by Jerry Green and Dennis Edwards the following year.  The Edwards version was ultimately issued in 1974, with the Gordon version surfacing in

George Harrison’s years at Apple Records were among his most productive.  The Quiet Beatle inaugurated Apple’s LP series with 1968’s Wonderwall Music soundtrack and nearly closed out the label with its final album of original material (1975’s Extra Texture (Read All About It)).  In between, Harrison released a series of solo records, oversaw the soundtrack to his groundbreaking Concert for Bangla Desh, and lent a helping hand to Apple artists including Badfinger, Jackie Lomax, Billy Preston,

star trek into darkness

Last week, Varese Sarabande boldly went with yet another deluxe edition of a Star Trek soundtrack: the most recent film, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, featuring music composed by Michael Giacchino. Following 2009's astounding film reboot, Into Darkness pits Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the crew of the USS Enterprise against a rogue Federation officer, John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), part of a traitorous plot to engage in a war with the Klingon Empire. We won't spoil the
