Driven by the Music brings this classic concert from Donna Summer to CD/DVD and LP. It was recorded on August 6, 1983 as part of Summer’s Hard for the Money tour at the then-recently opened Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California. In front of over 18,000 fans, Summer performed material from the new album (the smash “She Works Hard for the Money,” “Woman,” “Unconditional Love” with Musical Youth) and its 1982 self-titled predecessor (“State of Independence” with her daughter Mimi, “Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger)”) as well as her beloved disco classics (“MacArthur Park,” “On the Radio,” “Last Dance,” and a medley from Bad Girls). She also looked back to the shelved 1981 LP I’m a Rainbow for “Romeo” (resurrected for the Flashdance soundtrack) and the Evita showstopper “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” and looked ahead to 1984’s Cats Without Claws for “Forgive Me.” For this edition, the CD has been paired with a NTSC, region-free DVD as newly “restored from the analogue video tape.” The 2-LP colored vinyl iteration features the same 14 tracks as the CD and DVD. A digital version of the audio will also be available.

I’m a Rainbow: Remixed and Recoloured features 10 of the original 18 tracks recorded during the I’m a Rainbow sessions (all of which wouldn’t have made the cut had the album been released as a single LP in 1981) including the title song written by Summer’s husband Bruce Sudano and a cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita showstopper “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” All ten tracks have been remixed and reconceived by an array of international producers including Junior Vasquez, Le Flex, Figo Sound, Jean Tonique, Ladies On Mars and recent Atlantic Records signee Oliver Nelson. Featuring almost everything from the original On the Radio set (the long version of the title track is omitted, as are Bad Girls tracks “Our Love” and “Sunset People”), the first disc adds seven songs from the period covered by that original set, including a cover of Barry Manilow’s “Could It Be Magic,” cuts from the thematic Four Seasons of Love and even “Down Deep Inside,” Summer’s theme song from the 1977 underwater thriller The Deep. From there, On the Radio brings another disc of 20 tracks from the remainder of Summer’s Casablanca era, along with tracks from her tenures on Geffen, Atlantic and Epic, along with the closing cut “I’m a Fire,” heard on her final album Crayons (2008). In essence, this is an all-new collection with the On the Radio artwork and branding. It’s a great gift for those just getting into Summer or for those collectors looking for the “short” edits of her most famous songs on CD, but it might not be right for fans of the original On the Radio, with its own unique, continuous mix. The flavor is very different here, too, as the set extends all the way into the 21st century rather than focusing on the disco era floor-fillers. It’s all packaged nicely in Edsel’s 7-inch format, with a stapled-in 8-page insert offering credits but no discographical annotation. Images of many of the original single sleeves on the gatefold is a nice touch, however. Phil Kinrade has mastered, and the sound quality is comparable to that of Driven by the Music’s other recent Summer releases. With a generous 40 tracks, many in tough-to-find mixes, the new On the Radio is an essential collection – but one might wish it had a new title and artwork to differentiate it from a reissue of the classic 1979 compilation.
