Was the insanely large Europe '72 box set from The Grateful Dead (which should be making its way to fans pretty soon) too much for you? Rhino's breaking off a little piece for you in the form of Europe '72 Volume 2, a double-disc set compiled from those 22 legendary shows. This sequel to the original triple-LP has 20 remastered performances from those wild shows on two discs, mixed from the original 16-track recordings by Dead archival mixer Jeffrey Norman and mastered by David Glasser to HDCD

layla and other assorted love songs 2 cd 40th anniversary deluxe edition

Derek and The Dominos, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs: 40th Anniversary Edition (Polydor/UMe) Unbeknownst to us at Second Disc HQ, a lot of weird stuff has been going on with this deluxe edition. It seems that, for whatever reason, the 2-CD edition of this set is retailing only at Best Buy until April 26, at which point it'll be released more widely. No extra material seems to be present, just a lengthy lead time in terms of exclusivity. Weird, man. And of course there's that super-deluxe

kinks

Those upcoming deluxe reissues of the first three Kinks LPs in the U.K. this April are coming to American record stores too! They've been set for April 12, one week after the British release date. (Thanks to MusicTAP for the tip!) Buried at the bottom of a press release touting the forthcoming Big Audio Dynamite reunion tour - no doubt spurred on in part by last year's pretty great deluxe reissue of their first album - there's a mention that Legacy is working with B.A.D. on more Legacy Editions

100dollarbill

The revelation of The Rolling Stones' CD singles box set is pretty cool, and living proof that the catalogue music business is still thriving. It's a year that's given or will give us a box set of Danny Elfman's music for Tim Burton, all of Aretha Franklin's Columbia-era material and an enormous run-through of The Grateful Dead's European tour of 1972. But how much is all of this worth? The Stones set, when one converts from pounds to U.S. dollars, is nearly $300. How worth it is that for some

road trips vol 4 no 2

The first entry in The Grateful Dead's Road Trips series for the new year has been announced. Road Trips Vol. 4, No. 2: April Fools '88 is only the second Dead show ever released from that year, a year which was preceded by highlights on either side of the calendar. (The previous year saw the release of the band's Top 10 hit "Touch of Grey" and a tour with Bob Dylan; the next year saw a flurry of officially released live material.) This set captures, over three discs, the band's April 1, 1988

The train keeps on rolling for Grateful Dead fans. The band have prepped another vintage live release in their ongoing Road Trips series and a special reissue of late frontman Jerry Garcia's live acoustic forays in the late 1980s. Volume 4 of Road Trips starts with a three-disc set capturing the band's two nights at The Big Rock Pow Wow, an outdoor festival held on a Seminole reservation in Florida in May 1969. Recorded months after the Fillmore West shows expertly captured on Live Dead, the

The Grateful Dead is releasing a five-LP box set containing reissues of the band's first five studio albums for Warner Bros. records. The set is due on September 21; pre-orders placed now get a bonus reproductions of a 7" single and a vintage promo poster. While we await tomorrow's pre-order date for a crazy-enormous

Rhino Handmade has announced its latest title, a thoroughly expanded edition of Delaney & Bonnie's seminal live LP On Tour with Eric Clapton. In late 1969, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett embarked on a killer tour that included some of the best blues and rock musicians of the era. Clapton was the featured performer, to be sure, but that tour also included star turns from Leon Russell, Dave Mason of Traffic, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon and Bobby Whitlock (who would form Derek and The Dominos with

We catalogue enthusiasts are an odd bunch. The music industry at large is horrified about consumers not buying as much physical music as they used to - but a lot of reissue buyers, interested in the preservation of our collections and their sound quality, are still scouring record stores for purchases. Labels releasing new music have to recontextualize what constitutes "strong sales" now that albums rarely pass 250,000 copies in their first week - but our favorite reissues are lucky to have
