Review: Gerry Beckley, "Carousel"

September 16, 2016 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Gerry Beckley Carousel

Gerry Beckley celebrated his 64th birthday earlier this week, on Monday, September 12.  We're marking the occasion with a look at his new studio album! One hardly expects the first verse of the first song on a new album from America's resident romantic troubadour, Gerry Beckley, to include the lines "Everything's turned to shit/No matter how I look at it/And I am running out of time..." But while Beckley is happily defying convention on "Tokyo" - the taut, rocking opening cut of his new album

Have Some Faith in The Sound: George Michael's "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" To Be Expanded to a Box Set To Mark Anniversary

September 15, 2016 By Randy Fairman 5 Comments

George Michael Listen 25

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of George Michael's second solo album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1.  While nothing hit the shelves last year to commemorate the occasion, that is being rectified this year when Legacy Recordings releases Listen Without Prejudice 25 on November 11. After the breakup of Wham! in 1986, George Michael moved quickly to kick his solo career into high gear.  The result was the 1987 album Faith, where he wrote (or co-wrote) and produced every track.  Buoyed by

Don't Walk On By: Legacy To Release Single-Disc Roy Orbison Career Retrospective

September 14, 2016 By Randy Fairman 3 Comments

Roy Orbison Ultimate

This last April marks what would have been Roy Orbison's 80th birthday had he not sadly died in 1988 at the age of 52.  As one of the pioneers of rock 'n' roll, there have been numerous compilations and reissues devoted to Orbison's career.  Just this last year, Universal released a 13-CD box set chronicling his tenure at MGM Records.  But, despite all of the collections over the years, there hasn't been one that rounded up selections from most stages of his career from his time at Sun Records

Elvis The Wonder of You

Despite having passed away nearly 40 years ago, Elvis Presley remains a large presence on the charts and on the shelves of stores.  Just this year, Elvis has had a 60-disc box devoted to all of the music he released in his lifetime and a 2-CD set concentrating on his final recordings .  And last year's If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, melding Elvis' vocals with new orchestral backings, hit the Top 25 in the U.S. but was a larger success in the U.K. - hitting

Review: The Beatles, "Live at The Hollywood Bowl"

Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl

And now...here they are...The Beatles! The summers of 1964 and 1965 are now more than fifty years in the rearview mirror, yet the music made by four lads from Liverpool over three evenings at Los Angeles' famous Hollywood Bowl now sounds so fresh and so immediate, you could believe it was recorded yesterday.  Such is the work of the sonic wizards on Capitol/Apple/UMe's first-time-on-CD, retitled, remixed and expanded reissue of The Beatles' Live at the Hollywood Bowl (B0025451-02,

Review: Judy Henske and Jerry Yester, "Farewell Aldebaran"

August 29, 2016 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Judy Henske and Jerry Yester Farewell Aldebaran

Hello, Aldebaran...or more accurately, welcome back! Farewell Aldebaran first arrived in 1969 on Frank Zappa's Straight Records label from the duo of Judy Henske and Jerry Yester.  Henske was the onetime "Queen of the Beatniks" whose distinctive, bluesy and big voice earned her legions of fans on the folk circuit.  In 1963, Henske married Jerry Yester, a member of The Modern Folk Quartet and veteran of The New Christy Minstrels.  When the MFQ broke up, Yester busied himself as a producer,

Warm Ride: HNE Collects Graham Bonnet's Pre-Rainbow Albums Including Lost LP

August 29, 2016 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Graham Bonnet Back Row

Cherry Red's Hear No Evil Recordings imprint has returned to the catalogue of Graham Bonnet with a pair of recent releases.  Before stepping into the role vacated by Ronnie James Dio in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, the big-voiced Bonnet had cut a number of records in a pop/R&B, rather than a hard rock, vein.  HNE has reissued and expanded the vocalist's never-before-released 1974 DJM album Back Row in the Stalls on one CD, as well as Graham Bonnet (1977) and No Bad Habits (1978) on a

The Warner Bros. Collection brings together the compilations The Complete Warner Bros. Singles and We Need To Go Back: The Unissued Warner Bros. Masters, both originally issued in 2013 in one slipcase.  The 40 tracks on these two CDs provide a good look at Warwick's tenure for Warner Bros. between her huge hits on Scepter and her resurgence on Arista - including an entire disc's worth of rarities from Burt Bacharach, Thom Bell, Jerry Ragovoy, Ashford and Simpson and other musical legends!

August 26, 2016 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Becoming The Beach Boys

Just shy of fifty years after the release of the single of the same name, the good vibrations of The Beach Boys continue to resonate far outside of the band's native Southern California - in fact, they can be felt around the world.  Mike Love, currently leading the group for another endless summer of touring with Bruce Johnston and longtime sideman Jeffrey Foskett, is about to release his autobiography on September 13.  One month later, on October 11, I Am Brian Wilson: A Memoir arrives in

Joe Jackson Night and Day

Look Sharp!  Joe Jackson certainly did as nattily attired on his debut release of that name.  Joined by Graham Maby on bass, Gary Sanford on guitar and Dave Houghton on drums, pianist-singer Jackson delivered a record for the ages.  Both Look Sharp! and Night and Day, Jackson's fifth album for A&M Records, have recently been reissued as deluxe audiophile vinyl editions by the team at Intervention Records.  Happily, they're sonically every bit the equal of the label's stellar reissue earlier

We recently filled you in on the ninth volume of Ace Records' long-running series, Where the Girls Are.  Today, we spotlight two companion volumes dedicated to Beat Girls of the 1960s! Pye Records, home of Petula Clark and The Kinks, practically defined the British "big beat" sound of girl-pop with its urbane, sophisticated productions.  Scratch My Back! August 19, 2016 By Joe Marchese 9 Comments

Turtles Album Collection

Prepare to be shell-shocked!  Manifesto Records and FloEdCo have, at long last, given fans of The Turtles deluxe sets befitting the band's happy (and happily subversive!) musical legacy.  The 6-CD Complete Original Album Collection and 2-CD All the Singles round up, in truly definitive fashion, the original band's recordings between 1965 and 1970 as first released on White Whale Records.  Though The Turtles have long been recognized as top-flight purveyors of classic 45s, a journey through their

Major Tom (Coming Home Again): Hot Shot Revisits Peter Schilling's "Error in the System"

Peter Schilling Error

Ground control to Major Tom...Big Break Records' sister imprint Hot Shot Records has recently reissued Peter Schilling's 1983 synthpop favorite Error in the System on CD in a newly expanded edition boasting a full complement of nine bonus tracks. Error marked the first English-language album by German singer-songwriter Schilling and was, in turn, based on his German debut long-player Fehler im System of the previous year.  Schilling's sleek, New Wave-influenced sounds won him attention in
