Ben Folds Brick Cover

Edsel has just announced a 13-CD box set looking at the career of alternative music star (and one of our favorite artists here at Second Disc HQ) Ben Folds, both as a solo artist and as a member of Ben Folds Five.  Brick: The Songs of Ben Folds 1996-2012, due June 22, contains nearly all of Folds' core studio albums together with a live album and some other odds and ends.  It traces his career from the first Ben Five Folds record through his solo recordings to the Five's reunion album in

Sign of the Times: Cherry Red Collects "The Very Best of Tappan Zee Records"

April 6, 2018 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Tappan Zee Records

The story of Tappan Zee Records is very much the story of Bob James.  The versatile keyboardist, arranger and producer established the Tappan Zee label in 1977 to maximize the crossover success he had already experienced at Creed Taylor's CTI label.  Cherry Red and Robinsongs' new 2-CD, non-chronologically arranged collection The Very Best of Tappan Zee Records presents an appealing cross-section of Tappan Zee's finest work from artists like James, Richard Tee, Earl Klugh, and Steve Khan. The

RPM Round-Up, Part One: Label Reissues James Royal, Shel Talmy Productions from Jon-Mark and Wild Silk

March 7, 2018 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Wild Silk Visions

Cherry Red's RPM label continues to trawl the deepest vaults for truly rare gems in the realms of pop, rock, and R&B.  Part One of this two-part RPM Round-Up focuses on three rarities-packed collections from the mid-to-late 1960s! Despite releasing eighteen singles and one album between 1965 and 1972 in his home of the U.K., James Royal never achieved stardom while he was recording.  But the blue-eyed soul man's stellar body of work began attracting fans on the northern soul and mod

Review: Chris Hillman, "The Asylum Years"

March 5, 2018 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Chris Hillman Asylum Years

Chris Hillman is surely one of rock's largely unsung heroes.   A veteran of groups including The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Desert Rose Band, and supergroup The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, Hillman last year released the acclaimed album Bidin' My Time - only his seventh solo album.  Produced by Tom Petty (one of the late superstar's last projects) with one foot in the past and another in the present, the LP reaffirmed the artist's deserved place in the pantheon.  Now, Omnivore

Seasons In The Sun: Frank, Dusty, Petula, More Salute Rod McKuen On New Anthology

March 7, 2017 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Rod McKuen Loves Been Good to Me

In the case of Rod McKuen, "prolific" might well have been an understatement.  Before he turned 35, McKuen had already lived many lives - from farm hand, lumberjack, rodeo cowboy, disk jockey, and U.S. Army veteran to singer, songwriter, actor, and the most commercially successful poet of his time - or any other.  Despite an enviable career that saw him receive two Academy Award nominations and Frank Sinatra dedicate an entire album to him, the songs of Rod McKuen frequently haven't received

We filled you in recently about Cherry Red and SoulMusic Records' recent salute to songstress Vivian Reed, but the label has also offered a pair of titles from two more great ladies of song: Gladys Knight and the late Natalie Cole. Gladys Knight's The Solo Collection collects her first two Pips-less albums, from 1978 and 1979: the Buddah Records release of Miss Gladys Knight, and its Columbia follow-up, Gladys Knight.  The second disc features eight bonus tracks associated with the latter

Scepter Records Square

Sundazed Music has announced a trio of limited edition releases for Black Friday's Record Store Day event, and they're sure to be a crate-digger's delight. Scepter Records may today be best remembered as the home of Dionne Warwick's classic recordings, but the New York label founded by pioneering executive Florence Greenberg also gave a home to The Shirelles, B.J. Thomas, Chuck Jackson, Maxine Brown, and numerous other stars of soul and pop.  In addition, Greenberg nurtured a stable of some

You Remind Me Of The Sun: New Collections Arrive from Jeff Larson, Jeffrey Foskett

August 11, 2016 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Best of Jeff Larson

More than fifty years have passed since John Phillips so vividly encapsulated the California myth with The Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'," but the Golden State continues to inspire artists with its promise of eternally sunny days.  The strains of "California music" are as varied as the state's regions, from surf to punk to psychedelia to country to metal.  Despite changing times and changing tastes, however, richly melodic pop-rock has never gone out of fashion in California.  Two

Cher I Paralyze

I Paralyze, the seventeenth studio album from the one and only Cher, had all of the earmarks of a hit album.  Her first and only LP for Columbia Records, it boasted a line-up of heavy hitters including producer-songwriters John Farrar (a string of Olivia Newton-John's most beloved hits including "Magic," "Have You Never Been Mellow," and "Hopelessly Devoted to You") and David Wolfert (whose credits include Melissa Manchester, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand and Dusty Springfield), songwriter

At The Groovy Cellar: RPM Reveals "Another Splash of Colour: New Psychedelia in Britain 1980-1985"

June 17, 2016 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Another Splash of Colour

Mention psychedelia and chances are you're transported to a certain patchouli-scented period in the late 1960s, a hazy period of high times and boundary-breaking musical creativity.  The spirit of psychedelia didn't die with the advent of glam, hard rock or disco, however, though it may have been submerged for a time.  In 1981, the 13-track album A Splash of Colour chronicled Great Britain's "New Psychedelia" with '60s-influenced cuts from The Mood Six, Miles Over Matter, The High Tide, The

A Matter Of Time: Glen Campbell's Atlantic Years Anthologized By Varese

June 15, 2016 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Glen Campbell For the Good Times

Following the release of 1981's It's the World Gone Crazy, Glen Campbell left Capitol Records, his home of two decades, and moved over to Atlantic Records' new country division, Atlantic America.  The superstar artist remained at Atlantic through 1986, releasing three mainstream country LPs while simultaneously recording contemporary Christian material at Word.  Varese Vintage has recently released the first anthology of this oft-overlooked period in Campbell's career.  For the Good Times

Review: JD Souther, "John David Souther (Expanded Edition)"

January 18, 2016 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

John David Souther

In 2007, a new song from the Eagles blazed onto the radio airwaves, climbing to a Top 10 AC/Top 25 Country berth on the Billboard charts.  But the infectious, breezy "How Long," with its classic Eagles sound, wasn't new at all.  The song was written by JD Souther and included on his 1972 Asylum Records debut John David Souther.  When the Eagles included it on Long Road Out of Eden, the band's first studio album since 1979, it rekindled the creative relationship with Souther, an "honorary Eagle"

Love and Affection More Motown Girls

Rarely is the sequel ever the equal - but Ace Records has handily disproved that with Love and Affection: More Motown Girls, a recent trawl through the vaults of Hitsville, USA.  And not only is this follow-up to 2013's Finders Keepers - Motown Girls the equal of its predecessor, it might be its better.  Whereas that volume featured both previously unreleased music and rarities, every one of the 25 tracks on Love and Affection is never-before-heard (save for five songs culled from last year's
