Last evening in Washington, DC, Joni Mitchell joined the 44th class of Kennedy Center Honorees alongside Bette Midler, Berry Gordy, Lorne Michaels, and Justino Diaz.  The singer-songwriter who has blurred the lines of folk, pop, rock, and jazz was celebrated by friends and admirers including Brandi Carlile, Herbie Hancock, Ellie Goulding, Norah Jones, Brittany Howard, Dan Levy, and Cameron Crowe.  President Joe Biden, also in attendance, had earlier summed up the thoughts of many when he

The Drifters We Gotta Sing

Between 1954 and 1966, The Drifters notched 32 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, with a thirty-third "bubbling under."  Five of those hits reached the top ten.  The African-American vocal group's fortunes were even greater on the R&B chart where, of 30 entries between 1953 and 1974, 23 reached the top ten.  Despite an ever-changing lineup, The Drifters remain a beloved cornerstone of American pop and soul.  Now, Cherry Red's Strawberry Records imprint has chronicled one period of the group's

Half a Sixpence Studio Cast

The tuneful 1963 musical comedy Half a Sixpence was an instant sensation in London's West End, inspiring a subsequent Broadway production and big-screen adaptation.  A musical version of H.G. Wells' novel Kipps, Half a Sixpence featured music and lyrics by David Heneker and book by Beverley Cross.  It opened with Tommy Steele as Arthur Kipps, successfully transforming the pop idol into a theatrical star. Waiting for the Man: Soundtrack for Todd Haynes' Velvet Underground Film Due in October

Velvet Underground OST

Director Todd Haynes has long emphasized music in his filmography.  One of his first works to garner significant attention was 1987's controversial and unauthorized Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story; four years later, his evocation of the glam rock era in Velvet Goldmine made more commercial waves.  More recently, he's been attached to direct Michelle Williams in the forthcoming Peggy Lee biopic Fever.  But before Haynes tackles Peggy, he's returning to a different Velvet: The Velvet

Frank Zappa 200 Motels

1971 was a banner year for cinema with such all-time classics as The French Connection, A Clockwork Orange, Carnal Knowledge, The Last Picture Show, and Shaft.  The highest-grossing film of the year in North America was United Artists' Fiddler on the Roof.  But Fiddler wasn't the studio's only musical of the year. Mere days before the Broadway adaptation hit cinemas, UA opened one of the most wild, inventive, outré, and unhinged films of the year: 200 Motels.  Written, co-directed, and composed

Show Time Series Volume Three

By 1953, RCA Victor already boasted a considerable number of Broadway classics in its catalogue - from original cast recordings of Brigadoon and Paint Your Wagon to studio cast renditions of South Pacific and Finian's Rainbow.  But the label was eager to build up its musical theatre repertoire and compete with the likes of Columbia and Decca.  To that end, the Show Time series was launched - a collection of 16 EPs, each dedicated to four songs from a beloved musical or operetta.  The EPs were
