Review: Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer, "Two of a Kind: Expanded Edition"

March 24, 2017 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer Two of a Kind

Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer were, indeed, two of a kind.  Though Darin is known first and foremost as one of the most dynamic performers of all time, and Mercer as one of the most prodigiously talented songwriters of all time, Bobby was no slouch in the songwriting department, and Mercer was a remarkably engaging vocalist.  Both men were entrepreneurs and keen talent spotters who added immeasurably to the fabric of American music and culture.  They came together on record but once, for a 1961

In Memoriam: Chuck Berry (1926-2017)

March 19, 2017 By Joe Marchese 3 Comments

Chuck Berry

Though Chuck Berry passed away yesterday at the age of 90, his "rock and roll music" will never die, any old way you choose it.  Berry was among the vanguard of artists who transformed rhythm and blues into rock and roll with such landmark recordings as "Maybellene," "Johnny B. Goode," "Roll Over Beethoven," and yes, "Rock and Roll Music", and in doing so, inspired The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and just about every kid who ever dreamed of picking up a guitar and making a

Blink-182 Go Back to "California" This Summer

March 17, 2017 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

California Deluxe

We've all dealt with bands reissuing an album with a track or two a year or so later; that feeling of re-purchasing is a familiar pain indeed. But Blink-182 are easing the blow a little bit on a reissue of their latest album, California, offering fans essentially another whole album! The power-pop-punk trio turned heads with their seventh studio album last year, the first recorded without founding member and singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge after a relatively bizarre public breakup in 2015 (a

March 17, 2017 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

KR Charlie Brown Cov 600x600

For nearly 50 years, getting the complete score to 1969's animated feature A Boy Named Charlie Brown was as fruitless as kicking a football held by Lucy Van Pelt. Kritzerland's newest album changes all that, offering Vince Guaraldi and John Scott Trotter's score and Rod McKuen's songs as they appeared in the film for the very first time. A Boy Named Charlie Brown found producer Lee Mendelson and director Bill Melendez teaming up again to bring Charles M. Schulz's beloved Peanuts comic strip

Bach Onto This: Deep Purple Founder Jon Lord's "Before I Forget" Reissued by Cherry Red

March 15, 2017 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Jon Lord Before I Forget

"Jon Lord and Whitesnake fans must occasionally want to be introspective," reckoned Deep Purple and Whitesnake founding member Jon Lord, "and I'd rather they did so with my music than Barry Manilow's."  Lord was explaining the impetus for his third solo album, 1982's Before I Forget.  Cherry Red and Purple Records have recently reissued the composer-producer-keyboardist's Before I Forget on CD in an expanded edition bringing together bonus tracks included on the 1999 and 2012 editions. As controversial as the Paul McCartney Archive Collection's approach to Flowers in the Dirt has been, the official release of demos from McCartney's fruitful writing sessions with Elvis Costello has made for some excitement around Second Disc HQ. Six years after Yep Roc Records put Nick Lowe's long-unavailable Labour of Lust on CD, the label is making two more exceptionally rare entries in his discography available once again. This spring, the label will repress Nick the Knife (1982) and The Abominable Showman (1983) on LP and CD--the first appearance of either album on the latter format in more than 25 years. Neal, Meet Neil: Varese Premieres Hefti's Scores to Simon's "Barefoot," "Odd Couple"

March 9, 2017 By Joe Marchese 6 Comments

Barefoot in the Park

If there's a sound associated with playwright Neil Simon, it's that of laughter.  And if it's a musical sound, it's the sound of Neal Hefti.  The late composer (1922-2008) created the memorable theme that introduced The Odd Couple to the big screen in 1968, and has been subsequently heard on television in 1970, and once again today in a small-screen revival.  Varese Sarabande's We Hear You series has recently offered a tale of two Neil/Neals with the world premiere releases on CD of the original

Fab Gear: RPM Premieres Mortimer's Lost Apple Records Album

March 8, 2017 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Mortimer On Our Way Home

Another missing piece of the Apple Records puzzle has just emerged thanks to Cherry Red's RPM Records label.  Between February and April 1969, the New York band Mortimer worked with producer Peter Asher (Peter and Gordon, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt) at London's Trident Studios to craft an LP for The Beatles' Apple Records label.  The Fabs' imprimatur was firmly in place: John Lennon had passed their music onto Apple, George Harrison had encouraged their signing, and Paul McCartney had given
