Legacy RSD

Is it just us, or has Record Store Day felt a little muted in recent years? Obviously the annual Black Friday celebration boasts less titles than the festivities held every April, but it's sometimes been a struggle to identify great archival titles or worthy re-pressed discs. Well, that certainly isn't the case this year: labels seem to have gone into overdrive stockpiling interesting LPs and singles worth a second (or first!) look - and one of the strongest showings might be Sony Music's Legacy

RSDRopsLogo Square

Like most things that have gone on this year, Record Store Day 2020 has been a rollercoaster ride. The result: three days of Record Store Drops. This Saturday, October 24, music fans will be joining the queue - whether in-person if it's safe to do so or online - for their chance at some limited-edition vinyl. Ahead of the event itself, we thought we'd break down what you can expect and detail some of the releases for which we're most excited. The main change from years past? Shorter lines and

RSD Drops 2020

As the world begins to slowly open up again, one thing that vinyl aficionados can look forward to is Record Store Day's RSD Drops.  As we've previously reported, the organization opted to cancel their big day in April, and instead the titles will be released over three "drops" on August 29, September 26, and October 24.  Legacy Recordings has announced their full, updated list of RSD Drops contributions from Cheap Trick, Tyler The Creator, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Toto, Manic Street Preachers,

On July 31, Real Gone Music will present two more hidden gems on vinyl.  This pairing includes Soul Asylum's Let Your Dim Light Shine, an alt-rock success returning to vinyl for the first time in 25 years, and prog rock outfit Man's Revelation, an ambitious concept album from 1969. As a follow-up to Soul Asylum's breakthrough Grave Dancers Union, the 1995 effort Let Your Dim Light Shine saw the band under pressure to deliver.  Here, they established themselves as a more radio-friendly band -

Soul Asylum Say What You Will

For some listeners, Soul Asylum may be best known as the group that had a worldwide hit in 1993 with "Runaway Train."  The band's major label breakthrough on Columbia Records, it was a Top 10 hit in 14 countries that went Gold in the U.S. and four other territories, brought their album Grave Dancers Union to multi-Platinum status, and garnered a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1994.   But there's more to the band than that.  Their journey to that global acclaim, starting as rowdy punk band --

Soul Asylum While You Were Out OV 314 AMAZON

Omnivore Recordings' series of Soul Asylum reissues has shone a light on their early years. Last Friday, January 18, the most recent installment--an expanded edition of While You Were Out--was released. It was Soul Asylum's last independent album on Twin/Tone Records before the group signed with A&M Records. Originally released in 1986 (their third album that year!), it's considered by many to be their best work. Omnivore's reissue combines the original album with the 1988 rarities

Golden Smog Down by the Old Mainstream

What do you get when you bring together members of Wilco, Soul Asylum, and The Jayhawks and throw them into a remote recording studio in Minnesota wilderness? Well, as the Run Out Groove label proved with its LP reissue earlier this year, the result is one mighty down-home, fun album of country-rock grooves: Down By the Old Mainstream by '90s supergroup Golden Smog. While their lineup has been mercurial since they first got together in the late-'80s, the core lineup included Kraig Johnson of

Soul Asylum Made to Be Broken

Before breaking through to the big leagues with major label albums on A&M and most crucially, Columbia, Minneapolis-based alternative rock band Soul Asylum recorded four albums for the local Twin/Tone Records label.  On July 20, Omnivore Recordings will reissue the first two of those Twin/Tone LPs as deluxe, expanded CDs loaded with rarities and previously unreleased tracks. Say What You Will...Everything Can Happen arrived in 1984 on Twin/Tone, produced by Bob Mould of Husker Du.  Core

playlist lou rawls2

Legacy Recording has got another batch of titles in the long-running Playlist series for next month. The line-up is particularly diverse, stretching from soul (Lou Rawls, Patti Labelle) to more recent pop acts (Five for Fighting, Ace of Base, Bowling for Soup) and even touching on some gospel acts (including a spiritual disc from Willie Nelson). They're not as heavy on the rarities, although some of the sets have some appealing rare cuts; Mr. Mister's compilation will feature four tracks from
