Sit Down, I Think I Love You: Rhino's RSD Lineup Includes Grateful Dead, Dio, Stevie Nicks, Todd Rundgren, Madonna, and More "Nuggets"

February 21, 2023 By The Second Disc 4 Comments

RSD 2023Rhino has announced one of the most expansive lineups for this year's Record Store Day event at participating independent record stores on Saturday, April 22.  Rhino's slate includes two dozen titles from the label's heaviest hitters including Madonna, Grateful Dead, Stevie Nicks, Dio, Duran Duran, Ramones, Todd Rundgren, and more - plus a 50th anniversary celebration of the original Nuggets.

You'll find the complete list below, with descriptions provided by the label.  Visit RecordStoreDay.com to locate the nearest participating store.

Tori Amos Little Earthquakes B SidesTori Amos, Little Earthquakes: The B-Sides (1-LP black vinyl, limited to 14,500 copies)

A single LP collection of the B-sides and rarities featured alongside the singles from Tori's seminal release (and solo debut), Little Earthquakes. This is the first time these songs have been collected on a single release.

Blur, Blur Present the Special Collectors Edition (2-LP blue colored vinyl, limited to 20,000 copies)

Blur Present The Special Collectors Edition will be released on vinyl for the first time ever. Originally released in 1994, as a Japan-only CD, The Special Collectors Edition is a 2LP set pressed on colored vinyl, featuring a collection of B-sides from singles across the band's first three studio albums - Leisure, Modern Life Is Rubbish, and Parklife.

David Byrne, The Complete Score From "The Catherine Wheel" (2-LP 140-gram vinyl, limited to 11,500 copies)

An absolutely monumental masterpiece of late 20th century music is the seamless funk opera score David Byrne created for choreographer Twyla Tharp's The Catherine Wheel in 1981. This 2LP set marks the vinyl debut of the full score (previous releases contained only a 1LP condensed version). The tracks "Big Blue Plymouth", "My Big Hands", "Big Business," and "What a Day That Was" were all performed live by Talking Heads in 1982 and 1983.

Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band, I'm Going to Do What I Wanna Do: Live at My Father's Place 1978 (2-LP vinyl, limited to 5,000 copies)

Originally released on CD via Rhino Handmade in the early '00s, this is the first official vinyl release of this complete live show from the Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) tour. Recorded directly to 2-track stereo reel-to-reel tape and eventually broadcast on WLIR-FM on December 11, 1978, this recording finds Beefheart rejuvenated after the critical success of the Shiny Beast album and the new and improved version of the Magic Band. An essential addition to any Beefheart collection.

The Cure, SHOW (2-LP picture disc, limited to 10,000 copies)

This double live album was recorded on The Cure's 1992 Wish album tour, at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan. Originally released in 1993, the band comprised of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Porl Thompson, Boris Williams, Perry Bamonte, and features many of the band's biggest hits, including "Pictures Of You," "Lullaby, "Just Like Heaven," "The Walk, " "Friday I'm In Love," and "Inbetween Days". 2LP Picture Disc. Unavailable on vinyl since its original release in 1993. This will be the first time it's been on picture disc. The release was overseen by Robert Smith.

Dio Live in Fresno 1983Dio, Live in Fresno 1983 (2-LP red 140-gram vinyl, limited to 8,000 copies)

Originally included as an unreleased live from the Holy Diver tour disc on the 4-CD Holy Diver box set, this is the first time that this complete live show has been released on vinyl. Newly mixed from the analogue multitrack tapes by Wyn Davis, this set not only includes songs from Holy Diver, but also features Black Sabbath classics "Children Of The Sea" and "Heaven and Hell" as well as Rainbow's "Man on the Silver Mountain".

Duran Duran, Rio Carnival (1-LP pink & blue swirl vinyl, limited to 10,000 copies)

Following the release of Duran Duran's smash hit album RIO, a selection of Night Versions and Remixes were released on the Carnival EP. The original Carnival EPs were the key to unlocking Duran Duran's international success at the time and each track listing differed around the world. For the 40th Anniversary year of RIO this LP collects together all of the RIO Night Versions and Carnival Remixes into one collection for the first time exclusively for RSD 2023.

Grateful Dead, Boston Garden, Boston, MA 5/7/77 (5-LP 180-gram vinyl boxed set, limited to 11,000 copies)

Available for the first time on vinyl, Grateful Dead's May 7, 1977 performance at Boston Garden in a 5-LP, 180-gram vinyl boxed set.  The Grateful Dead performed more than 2,300 concerts, and of these many live shows, a three-night run in May 1977, spanning three cities on the East Coast, is arguably the Dead's greatest trio of shows: May 7 in Boston, MA, May 8 in Ithaca, NY, and May 9 in Buffalo, NY. These three shows, along with their near-equal from May 5 in New Haven, made up the long-ago sold-out box set Get Shown the Light. The last two nights of this run have been released on vinyl in previous years, and we're thrilled to add to the canon the magnificent Boston show. From its opening, playful "Bertha," through a flawless first set featuring "Cassidy," "Jack Straw," "Mississippi Half Step," "The Music Never Stopped," and many others, the Dead are clearly having a wonderful night in Beantown. The second set is filled with then-new and older songs from the Dead's catalog, including "Terrapin Station," "Estimated Prophet," "Eyes of the World," and "Wharf Rat," amongst others. A spectacular show from start-to-finish, Boston 5/7/77 is one of the most upbeat, accessible shows the Grateful Dead ever performed.

Jerry Harrison, The Red and The Black (Expanded Edition) (2-LP red & black colored vinyl, limited to 6,500 copies)

With his 1981 solo debut album The Red and the Black, Jerry Harrison proves his formidable talent as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Dense, abrasive and focused, The Red and the Black's complex and funky musical style was ahead of its time. Harrison's observations throughout the album on the modern condition ring all the more true in our digital age. This limited edition 2LP edition features the 1981 album recut from the original tapes plus a bonus LP of previously unreleased outtakes and alternate mixes.

Madonna American Life Mixshow MixMadonna, American Life - Mixshow Mix (In Memory of Peter Rauhofer) (12" 180-gram vinyl, limited to 17,000 copies)

Madonna releases American Life - Mixshow Mix, an exclusive EP celebrating the album's 20th anniversary and honoring the life and work of Peter Rauhofer, who created unforgettable remixes for Madonna and many other artists for over two decades.  The vinyl-only 8-song release will feature six brand new edits of Madonna's favorite commercial and promotional remixes from the American Life era.  A portion of sales proceeds will be donated to brain cancer research.

Stevie Nicks, Bella Donna Live 1981 (2-LP, 180-gram vinyl, limited to 14,000 copies)

Available for the first time on vinyl, this 2LP set features Stevie Nicks live, a recording from the White Winged Dove Tour, at the Fox Wilshire Theatre on December 13, 1981. The show included tracks from Bella Donna including "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Leather and Lace," and "Edge of Seventeen," along with Fleetwood Mac favorites "Gold Dust Woman," "Dreams," "Sara," and "Rhiannon."

Nuggets 50 BoxNuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era (1964-1968) [50th Anniversary Box] (5-LP boxed set, limited to 10,000 copies)

50th anniversary of the groundbreaking and influential compilation of the first generation of psychedelic artists curated by Lenny Kaye. This box set includes the original 2-LP set, the planned but unreleased Vol. 2, and a single LP of songs that were considered for the original set but didn't make the final cut. Like the original, this set is curated by Lenny Kaye with the full involvement of Jac Holzman - the original pioneers of Nuggets. Lenny has also written new, complete notes.

Ol' Dirty Bastard, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version (2-LP picture disc, limited to 12,000 copies)

2LP picture disc version of ODB's 1995 debut album Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version. Features the classic tracks "Shimmy Shimmy Ya", "Brooklyn Zoo", and "Hippa to da Hoppa."

The Pogues, The Stiff Records B-Sides (1984-1987) (2-LP black/green marbled vinyl, limited to 6,500 copies)

The Stiff Records B-Sides 1984-1987 is a collection of The Pogues non-album B-sides from the band's tenure on the famed Stiff Records label. This collection will be pressed on vinyl for the first time exclusively for RSD 2023.

todd a wizardTodd Rundgren, A Wizard, A True Star (1-LP 140-gram multi-colored vinyl, limited to 5,000 copies)

Sisters of Mercy, The Reptile House EP (1-LP 180-gram smokey colored vinyl, limited to 9,500 copies)

Tom Tom Club, Tom Tom Club (Expanded Edition) (2-LP pink colored vinyl, limited to 5,000 copies)

Tom Tom Club was founded in 1981 by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth as a side project from Talking Heads, and this 2-LP expanded edition of their classic debut album features the original album recut from the original tapes (including the timeless classics "Wordy Rappinghood" and "Genius of Love," famously sampled by Mariah Carey, Latto, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and countless others) plus a bonus LP of 12" mixes and rare single tracks.

Van Halen, Live: Right Here, Right Now (4-LP red translucent vinyl, limited to 7,500 copies)

30th Anniversary of Van Halen's Live: Right Here, Right Now on vinyl for the first time, exclusively for RSD 2023, featuring the original live album plus three additional tracks. Never before on vinyl, this live show was from the "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" tour when songs like "Right Now" and "Runaround" were huge pop radio and MTV hits. It was also the first and only Van Halen live album until 2015's Live in Tokyo. It contains fantastic live versions of Sammy-era hits like "Dreams", "Finish What Ya Started," and "Why Can't This Be Love" as well as unique versions of Sammy singing "Panama", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Jump" and his own "One Way to Rock". The 11:37 guitar solo has Edward running through his instrumental highlights including "316", "Cathedral" and "Eruption".  Three bonus tracks will be added to this set: "The Dream Is Over" and "Eagles Fly" from the companion DVD release (they were not released on the original 2CD set) and "Mine All Mine" from the Live: Jump EP from 1993.

Various Artists - Psyche France Vol. 8 (1-LP 140-gram vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies)

Rediscover a certain alternative French Pop with this 8th volume of the Psyché France collection! This new immersion in the heart of the '60s and '70s will surprise you with its share of curiosities initiated by psychedelic visionaries and forgotten mavericks. Start these sonic tribulations with Les Masters and their 'Petites amies', a band whose drummer was René Joly (Chimène - that's him!) and whose members were all nicknamed 'Sretsam' as a joke. Seconded by the scathing Gascogne cadet Jacques Filh and his 'Fini Borniol', they will open the field for Dani and her stunning 'Fallait pas' and L'assemblée, already known for 'Le chien'. Further on you will hear guitarist Jean-Pierre Castelain with the rare 'Ce jour-là' and go on a journey with Philippe Chatel, before succumbing to 'La Mandragore' by Gilbert Deflez, who invited Sylvia Fels on this song. On Side B, the Rimbaldian power of Quo Vadis will stun you with the tribute 'Zeppelin Party', followed by two pop gems by Voyage (recommended by Papillon, who used to play in Triangle) and Richard Contell. Richard Lable (brother of Denys, a member of the Shows) will then deliver a more hypnotic groove before the final appearance of the sorcerer Igor Wakhévitch and his 'Chirakan - Ixmucané'... Blinding like the sun in July!

The collection also includes two original tracks exclusive to the film, "Cherry on Top" and "Greatest Time."

Scott Weiland, 12 Bar Blues (2-LP blue/green colored vinyl, limited to 7,500 copies)

25th anniversary expanded edition of Scott Weiland's 1998 debut solo album 12 Bar Blues. First-ever vinyl release includes originally intended tracklist with two additional, previously unreleased tracks plus the unreleased demo of "Barbarella". Pressed on blue and green vinyl.

No CD, no reason to go to the record store on RSD. Sigh.

I am surprised they are releasing the Rundgren album on a single LP. The original was packed beyond capacity (almost a half-hour per side) and sounded terrible,

As was the "Initiation" album, about 68 minutes. Even the CD sounded bad. That Nuggets collection is interesting, though. Hope the Yes album sounds better than "Yessongs" and "Yesshows."

How's that possible? CD:s amount of music is 80 minutes. There's still 12 minutes left!

It would be nice if Rhino would also issue Jerry Harrison's The Red and The Black on CD in the expanded format as the original album is out of print and going for ridiculous prices on Discogs and eBay, if you can find one. As others have mentioned this is yet another why I don't bother with RSD anymore. How about a Compact Disc Store Day for those of us that don't care for vinyl releases.
