Hooray for Hollywood: New Box Set Celebrates 100 Years of The Hollywood Bowl with Sinatra, Bernstein, Doors, Newman, Dudamel, More

May 17, 2022 by Joe Marchese | 10 Comments

2022 marks 100 years of The Hollywood Bowl. The famous amphitheater nestled in the Hollywood hills has hosted luminaries of every genre of music from classical to rock in its instantly familiar bandshell (actually two bandshells, as the first one from 1929 was demolished in 2003 and replaced with a larger model). The Bowl has been featured in movies including the original A Star Is Born, Double Indemnity, Xanadu, and Beaches and cartoons starring Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, and The Pink Panther. Now, its resident orchestra – the prestigious L.A. Philharmonic…

The Complete RCA Album Collection

May 16, 2022 by Joe Marchese

Eugene Ormandy’s The Complete RCA Album Collection features the Hungarian-born American conductor’s early recordings as leader of The Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. He came to the attention of the Minnesota group after subbing for Arturo Toscanini, and was enlisted to step in for Henri Verbrugghen. The stint led to his leading the Symphony between 1931 and 1936, bringing him (and the Minneapolis Symphony) to national attention. The Complete RCA Album Collection includes every one of his RCA sides on 11 CDs, many of which weren’t ever issued on LP, let alone on CD. It’s…

The Minneapolis Sound: Sony Classical Boxes Eugene Ormandy’s Early Recordings with Minneapolis Symphony

May 2, 2022 by Joe Marchese | 3 Comments

Eugene Ormandy’s The Columbia Legacy, released last year, was the second-biggest box set in Sony Classical history. At a remarkable 120 discs, the box chronicled the early years of Ormandy’s affiliation with The Philadelphia Orchestra – one that, all told, would span 44 years and become the longest-ever relationship between conductor and orchestra. Ormandy first led the Orchestra in 1931 at just 32 years of age, filling in for his inspiration, Arturo Toscanini. He joined full-time in 1936, spending two years as joint conductor with Leopold Stokowski before being appointed sole Music…

Violin Concerto No. 2 and Selected Film Themes

April 6, 2022 by Joe Marchese

Legendary maestro John Williams has teamed once again with renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter for this premiere of his latest concert work. The four-movement piece was recorded by the Boston Symphony Orchestra; it’s supplemented on the CD release by new recordings of violin-led arrangements of three classic Williams themes: a piece from Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye, and the romantic themes for “Han Solo and The Princess” (as debuted in The Empire Strikes Back) and “Marion’s Theme” (from Raiders of the Lost Ark). Also planned is a stand-alone Blu-ray featuring the album in Pure Audio, surround…

Have Yourself a Merry Little Discmas…

December 24, 2021 by Mike Duquette | 12 Comments

Wow! And just like that, another year has flown by. Just a few weeks before The Second Disc hits its 12th anniversary(!), this Christmas Eve it is our custom to look back on the last 12 months and take some time to think fondly of the music, magic, memories and friends that made our lives worth living. As if last year wasn’t unconventional enough, 2021 packed more pop, clicks, skips and distortion than the most misguided vinyl pressings. We got vaccinated, we got boosted, we tentatively returned to concerts and live performances,…

Over the course of an extraordinary career, he’s earned 25 Grammy Awards, five Oscars (out of 52 nominations, second only to Walt Disney), four Golden Globes, and three Emmys. Rather than resting on his considerable laurels in recent years, he’s remained prolific, most recently scoring 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and serving as Music Consultant for longtime collaborator Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated remake of West Side Story. (He even penned the liner notes for the soundtrack release, out today in digital formats…

Classical Goes Rock: Prog “Peter and the Wolf” Featuring Manfred Mann, Brian Eno, Phil Collins, Stephane Grappelli Returns to CD from Cherry Red, Esoteric

December 2, 2021 by Joe Marchese | 5 Comments

Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf in 1936 as “a symphonic fairy tale for children.” As conceived, the narrator tells a story for children in which every character is musically “played” by a different instrument, i.e., the bird is a flute, the duck is an oboe, the cat is a clarinet, the grandfather is a bassoon, the Wolf is French horns, the hunters are woodwinds and trumpets, and Peter is string instruments. Prokofiev’s composition earned the attention of Walt Disney who famously turned it into a 15-minute animated short…
