January 17, 2023 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Strokes singles box

More than 20 years after The Strokes helped usher in a New York rock revival of sorts, the group will look back with a set of singles and rarities available on vinyl and digital. The Singles - Volume 01 chronicles the best of The Strokes' material from around their first three albums: breakthrough Is This It (2001) and follow-ups Room on Fire (2003) and First Impressions of Earth (2006). The set faithfully replicates a batch of 7" singles, complete with picture sleeves, that came out in the

In Memoriam: Jeff Beck (1944-2023)

January 11, 2023 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Jeff Beck Blow by Blow

Almost two months ago to the day, on November 12, 2022, Jeff Beck took the stage at Reno, Nevada's Grand Sierra Resort.  Performing with his friend Johnny Depp, Beck ran through a setlist of fan favorites and covers.  The guitar virtuoso made every song his own, with razor-sharp precision, an elegant tone, and a spellbinding touch.  Little did anyone in attendance know that the concert would be Beck's last.  After a short battle with bacterial meningitis, Jeff Beck has passed away at the age of

Way Over Yonder: Carole King's 1973 Central Park Concert Coming to Theatres, Streaming

January 6, 2023 By Joe Marchese 11 Comments

Carole King Home Again

When Carole King performed "Home Again" at Central Park's Great Lawn on May 26, 1973, the title held additional meaning.  Though she was one of music's most famous New Yorkers, Carole's move to southern California inspired her transformation from Brill Building tunesmith to full-fledged solo singer-songwriter.  Much as her songs such as "The Loco-Motion," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" defined the sound of the 1960s, "It's Too Late," "You've Got a

December 13, 2022 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Beach Boys Sail On Sailor 1972

I need a whole lot of sunshine to keep my sundial advancing... Who were The Beach Boys?  Hawthorne, California's favorite sons might have been asking themselves that very question in 1972.  Their creative leader was withdrawing further into himself and musical tastes were changing: where did that leave them?  This period of adjustment was first chronicled on last year's superlative Feel Flows: The Sunflower and Surf's Up Sessions 1969-1971 box set.  The story begun on that collection

Joni Mitchell Asylum Albums

2022 has been Joni Mitchell's year.  Following a triumphant surprise appearance in July at the Newport Folk Festival, the singer-songwriter announced a return to the stage for a full-length Joni Jam in June 2023 at Washington's Gorge Amphitheatre; tickets were quickly snapped up by ardent fans who had waited roughly two decades to see Mitchell in concert once again.  More recently, she attended her first-ever Broadway musical, Cameron Crowe and Tom Kitt's Almost Famous - and made her Broadway

In Memoriam: Christine McVie (1943-2022)

December 1, 2022 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

Christine McVie

Many words have already been typed to memorialize Christine McVie, the stalwart Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter/keyboardist who died November 30 after a brief illness. But really, it was right there in the name all along: before that fateful marriage to John McVie, she was born Christine Perfect. How she'd live up to that name over time. McVie, a founding member of the British blues band Chicken Shack, joined her bass-playing husband in Fleetwood Mac in 1970, a year after they were wed.

Songs of Innocence and Experience (1965-1995)

Marianne Faithfull Songs of Innocence and Experience

It was clear from the start that Marianne Faithfull was no ordinary artist.  Following the success of the singles "As Tears Go By" and "Come and Stay with Me" (gifted to Marianne by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards and Jackie DeShannon, respectively), Decca wanted her to record a pop album. Marianne wanted to record a folk album.  The result was that not one, but two, LPs were released in April 1965 showcasing two very different sides of the singer.  (For the record, the folk set outperformed

In Memoriam: Jerry Lee Lewis (1935-2022)

October 28, 2022 By Mike Duquette 9 Comments

Jerry Lee Lewis

To the uninitiated, the biography of Jerry Lee Lewis in 2022 read like a list of rock tropes so basic you can't believe they all happened to one man. Born to a poor Louisiana family that included a lot of famous Southerners (including cousins Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart), Jerry Lee's parents mortgaged their farm to buy him a piano and hoped he would honor the Lord in song. What they got instead was a firebrand, whose boogie-woogie sensibilities galvanized and scandalized the
