Sheena Easton A Private Heaven 40th

Cherry Red's Cherry Pop arm began its association with Sheena Easton with the 2021 release of The Definitive Singles 1980-1987.  The 3-CD, 51-song collection brought together the Scottish singer's A-sides including both 7- and 12-inch singles during that period.  Since then, Cherry Pop has refreshed much of Easton's discography including expanded editions on CD of Madness, Money, and Music, Take My Time, and A Private Heaven, and the first-time release of Live at the Palace, Hollywood in audio

Jimmy Wayne Jamison

Iconoclassic Records celebrates the life of former Survivor and melodic rock singer Jimi Jamison with its second release of previously unreleased material from the late artist: a country-flavored recording from 2007, entitled Jimmy Wayne Jamison.  After a return to Survivor in the 21st century, Jamison thrilled fans with 2007's Crossroads Moment, a rock album reuniting the singer with Jim Peterik, Survivor's co-founder and best-known creative engine, who'd not been a part of the group since 1996

It's a Jolly Holiday: 'Mary Poppins' Vinyl Box Announced for 60th Anniversary

June 24, 2024 By Mike Duquette 10 Comments

Poppins packshot

When Richard M. Sherman, one half of the legendary songwriting team The Sherman Brothers, passed away last month, The Second Disc was quick to pay tribute to all the duo's great works for Walt Disney films and elsewhere. But their most towering achievement is probably the song score to the whimsical Mary Poppins. This summer, to celebrate the film's 60th anniversary, Disney will release a limited edition vinyl box set collecting the film's original soundtrack, rare archival material and no less

I'm with the Band: Country Vocal Group Little Big Town Plans Greatest Hits Album Ahead of New Tour

June 20, 2024 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Streaming might have rendered the greatest hits album a comparative rarity in today's discographies, but country quartet Little Big Town are bucking the trend, planning a new collection of popular singles (and a few re-recordings) ahead of a tour this fall. The Alabama foursome, comprised of singers Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook (all of whom perform in rich harmony, with no de facto lead singer), have been together for 25 years, but started to take off

Review: David Bowie, "Rock 'N' Roll Star"

June 18, 2024 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

David Bowie Rock N Roll Star

"So Long, '60s," David Bowie proclaims on the first track of the new 5CD/1BD Parlophone box set Rock 'N' Roll Star.  Strumming his 12-string at a San Francisco Holiday Inn, the future superstar was embracing the new decade and its immense possibilities: "I'll kick you in the ass, you rascal, you!"  Its verse melody and the barest wisp of the lyric ("keep your mouth shut!") would make it to a new composition, "Moonage Daydream," the third song on his fifth album.  That LP was The Rise and Fall of

Country Survivor: Iconoclassic Preps Another Unreleased Jimi Jamison Album, in a Different Genre

June 18, 2024 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

Jimmy Wayne Jamison

Iconoclassic Records will celebrate the life of former Survivor and melodic rock singer Jimi Jamison with its second release of previously unreleased material this summer: a country-flavored recording from 2007, entitled Jimmy Wayne Jamison. For much of rock band Survivor's tenure - particularly a stellar run from 1984 to 1989 - Jimi Jamison was its voice: melodic and expressive, bringing gravitas and tenderness to pop hits like "I Can't Hold Back," "High on You," "The Search is Over,"

Road to 'Sugarland': La-La Land Records Premieres John Williams' First Score for a Steven Spielberg Film

June 17, 2024 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

The Sugarland Express

Legendary composer John Williams' personal and professional relationship with director Steven Spielberg has yielded 30 film scores, including Oscar-winning soundtracks to JAWS (1975), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Schindler's List (1993), three of Williams' five Academy Award wins in a career that's seen more nominations than anyone currently alive and only less total than Walt Disney. But Williams' first score in Spielberg's filmography was fairly infamous among collectors and fans as

Mr. Look-So-Good Is Back! Cherry Red, Robinsongs Collect Richard "Dimples" Fields' Boardwalk, RCA Albums

June 10, 2024 By The Second Disc Leave a Comment

Richard Dimples Fields The Albums 1980 1985

Richard "Dimples" Fields was one of the most unusual figures on the soul music landscape: a self-proclaimed feminist who portrayed himself as a two-timing ladies' man, whose quirky ballads were alternately earnest and humorous - sometimes uncomfortably so.   Fields made his gambit for mainstream success under the patronage of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart.  He brought the soul man onto his eclectic Boardwalk Records roster alongside such artists as Joan Jett, Ringo Starr, Carole Bayer

This Ain't No Foolin' Around: Talking Heads' Expanded 'Stop Making Sense' Comes to CD/Blu-ray with Atmos Mix

Stop Making Sense CD BD

For good reason, the Talking Heads have gotten a lot of mileage out of their triumphant restoration of the live concert film Stop Making Sense. Brilliantly remastered and reissued in theaters last year by A24 - an event that got the group to reunite for multiple interviews to promote it, including just last night at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, where the film was shot - the audio was released on vinyl and digital by Rhino Records. (A24 also put out a luxe Blu-ray and 4K version of the

Sean Rowley's Guilty Pleasures

When brothers Hy and Sam Weiss passed in 2007 and 2008, respectively, the Romanian-born immigrants to Brooklyn were eulogized as the last of the golden age record men.  The Weiss brothers formed their first record label in 1949; in 1953, they launched Old Town Records which Hy would take on as his own in 1956.  Many of Old Town's classic hits are still favorites today, such as The Capris' "There's a Moon Out Tonight," Billy Bland's "Let the Little Girl Dance," and "Remember Then" by The Earls.

Spit Enz

It's always a good time when Neil Finn has something to say. The legendary New Zealand singer-songwriter has been making the rounds promoting Gravity Stairs, the newly released album from Crowded House - and in an hourlong chat with countryman Zane Lowe for Apple Music, he said some exciting things for fans of Finn's first band Split Enz, which he was a part of with his older brother Tim. In Memoriam: Richard M. Sherman (1928-2024)

May 26, 2024 By The Second Disc 10 Comments

richard m sherman

Joe and Mike would like to share a few words on the remarkable life and music of Richard M. Sherman. Mike starts things off with a look back at Richard and his brother Robert's extraordinary achievements. Since the first whistles came from Mickey Mouse's lips in Steamboat Willie, the work of Walt Disney and his media empire has been inexorably tied with music. From lilting tunes in early animated and live-action features ("Heigh-Ho," "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah")

Van Halen For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge

For the first time ever, Rhino is expanding a Van Halen studio album. On July 12, the label will release a 2CD/2LP/Blu-ray edition of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, the group's ninth album and penultimate with lead singer Sammy Hagar, who'd taken over from David Lee Roth in 1985. As a major upstart rock act of the late '70s and one of the biggest of the '80s, Van Halen had something to prove on their first disc of the '90s - and this set delivers some intriguing bonus material from the era.
