Review: Ben Folds, "Brick: The Songs of Ben Folds 1994-2012"

September 25, 2018 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Ben Folds Brick

Upon its release in August 1995, the eponymous debut of Ben Folds' quirkily-named trio sounded like nothing else you might have found in the racks of your local Tower, HMV, or Sam Goody.  Filled with rich melodies, inescapable riffs, the most aggressive piano this side of Jerry Lee Lewis, and a youthful dose of attitude, Ben Folds Five channeled Todd Rundgren, Elton John, and Queen - with a dash of Randy Newman here and George Gershwin there.  Now, more than 23 years later, the (sorta) angry

September 7, 2018 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Taj Mahal Sounder

Varese Vintage has just reissued a pair of soundtracks on CD from an accomplished master of the film score genre (Nino Rota) and an American blues legend (Taj Mahal). 1979's Hurricane proved to be Nino Rota's final score.  It found the Italian-born composer (The Godfather, La Dolce Vita) adding a lush layer to the romantic "man-against-nature" adventure story.  Producer Dino De Laurentiis (King Kong, Flash Gordon) insisted the movie penned by Lorenzo Semple Jr. (the Batman television show,

Johnny Mathis Me and Mrs. Jones

TSD and Real Gone Music continue their Johnny Mathis reissue series with an expanded edition of Johnny's first album of 1973.  Me and Mrs. Jones proved to be one of his most eclectic albums of the decade.  Reuniting him with Jerry Fuller, the LP found the singer exploring a variety of styles and genres.  In addition to the title track from Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philly soul hit factory, Me and Mrs. Jones found Mathis singing the best of Broadway ("Corner of the Sky" from Pippin),

Peter Holsapple and Alex Chilton The Death of Rock

Two weeks ago, on July 27, Omnivore Recordings released Game Day from Peter Holsapple, the dB's co-founder and singer-songwriter's first album in 21 years.  It was, of course, filled with all of the melodic hooks and incisive lyrical turns of phrase one would expect from the multi-faceted artist.  Now, Omnivore has uncovered a much less expected piece of Holsapple's history - and one which converges with the label's ongoing efforts to restore and revisit the catalogue of Big Star's Alex

June 29, 2018 By Joe Marchese 4 Comments

Bang Bert Berns Story DVD

During his all-too-short lifetime, Bert Berns never received the kind of fame afforded many of his contemporaries on the New York music scene such as Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, or Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.  Yet, across the pond, young men like Paul McCartney and Keith Richards were taking notice whenever they saw the Berns imprimatur on one of their favorite 45s.  McCartney and Richards are just two of the luminaries who lined up to salute the
