The Latest Queen Reissue Update

Just a quick note to readers that Queen’s Web site has posted release dates for the upcoming reissues in all international territories. Except America of course! Over here, we’ve got a release date of “TBC,” which is perhaps better than “N/A.”

Would New Queen Reissues Ever Take on the World Someday?

For catalogue fans, the announcement of the track listings for the upcoming Queen reissues was the hot story of the week. New versions of the band’s first five albums, each expanded with a host of bonus tracks, are due in the U.K. in March as part of the band’s new licensing agreement with Universal Music Group – and there’s plenty of room on the fence, because many have taken a stand for or against the sets. To this writer, the track lists probably could have been better – but can’t they all…

How Killer Are the Queen Reissue Track Lists?

I see a little silhouetto of the track lists of the forthcoming U.K. Queen remasters, as released on the band’s official site today. There was a track list posted on the Steve Hoffman forums that was taken from a Japanese Web site and perhaps too heavily devoted to the remixes from The eYe (that odd 1998 computer game with five discs’ worth of remixes and instrumental tracks built into the CD-ROMs and suitable for ripping to one’s iPod). Those track lists were mostly wrong, thankfully. So what are fans going to get?…

Back Tracks: Queen, Part II

We continue our coverage of Queen’s previous reissues – in anticipation of the band’s forthcoming remasters on new U.K. home Island Records – with a look at Queen during most of the ’80s, where they went increasingly pop-friendly before returning to their rock roots in the 1990s, losing their iconic frontman and becoming anthologized in nearly a dozen or so compilations. The show must go on, after the jump.

Back Tracks: Queen, Part I

This week’s remaster and reissue of Queen’s first two greatest hits LPs in the U.K. (on new home Island Records) is the start of what promises to be a massive reissue campaign for the band’s 40th anniversary. The band’s first five LPs are slated to be expanded and released in March, with additional batches to follow through 2011. Of course, this isn’t the first time the Queen catalogue has been rolled out on CD. While British audiences got straight CD transfers throughout the late ’80s, Americans got slight expanded versions when the…

The Queen Remasters Begin

Amazon U.K. is posting order pages for what looks like the first batch of Queen remasters across the pond. It’s been previously reported that the first four Queen albums would be reissued (and possibly expanded) in England on Queen’s new home, Universal, in celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary. Happily, though, Universal will give fans a taste of what to expect in terms of presentation and mastering with straight reissues of the band’s first two greatest hits packages. Greatest Hits (1981) and Greatest Hits II (1991) succinctly covers the band’s biggest singles…

Queen Reissues Coming in 2011

It’s already been reported that Queen are moving their back catalogue rights from longtime home EMI to Universal Music Group – but a confirmation of those plans revealed some more info about what the move entails. A Reuters report today confirmed that the move (which only applies outside America – Disney’s Hollywood Records still controls the rights to the Queen catalogue in the U.S.) has taken place, and also mentioned that Universal, through the Island label, will remaster and reissue the Queen discography for the band’s 40th anniversary. The first five albums…

Queen Complete the Circle with Fourth Singles Box

The fourth and last box set in Queen’s Singles Collection series will bow on October 18 in the U.K. from EMI/Parlophone. In this 13-disc set, which recreates vintage Queen 45s and CD singles (and only some material from 12″ singles, making it a not-quite-complete set), the last chapter of the venerable rock band’s career will be chronicled – from The Miracle (1989) and Innuendo (1991) to all the singles released after lead singer Freddie Mercury’s death at the end of 1991. Expect a few rarer tracks on this set, including some live…

The Great Label Switch-Off

Last night, Vintage Vinyl News reported a story that could probably only happen in today’s music industry: according to the Times of London, Queen is leaving their longtime label EMI for Universal later in the year. As of right now, a few details about the rumored switch remain unclear. For starters, the article never definitively says whether the band’s voluminous back catalogue is moving with the members of Queen. Sure, they recorded one not-so-good LP with Paul Rodgers a year or two ago, but since the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury…

Release Round-Up: Lightfoot, Queen, ID4 and More

Amazon has posted pre-order links for new remasters for folk legend (and non-dead person) Gordon Lightfoot. Wounded Bird will distribute these new releases of the LPs he recorded for Warner/Reprise, from 1970’s Sit Down Young Stranger to 1998’s A Painter Passing Through (pre-order links are missing East of Midnight (1983) – not sure as to why). They’re due June 8. EMI has set a May 31 release date for Queen’s The Singles Collection Volume 3. This replicates 13 original 7″ singles (sorry dance fans, no 12″ mixes here) from “It’s a Hard Life” (from The Works…
