Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 12 - that's the date this year for Record Store Day, the date upon which fans, collectors, and everyone in between flocks to local independent record stores and hopefully gives those brick-and-mortar stores a leg up for the year! The full list has been posted, and here at TSD, we'll start today by spotlighting various releases from some of our favorite labels! Craft Recordings is among those labels, and they've just announced a batch encompassing jazz,
No Lightweight Sound: CD Box Set, Vinyl Reissues Chronicle Middle Period of Dub Syndicate
A scintillating collaboration between two titans of reggae - known as Dub Syndicate - will be revisited in a series of reissues covering their late '80s and early '90s output. Power Up! 'Super Mario' Music Comes to CD and Vinyl
Video game music - particularly of a certain vintage - is kind of hit or miss in the physical catalogue space or otherwise, so it gives us pleasure to point out a few upcoming releases of music old, new and otherwise from Nintendo's venerable Super Mario series on CD and vinyl. Available for the first time as a sprawling 3LP set, Warner Music Japan will make available the original soundtrack album to 1990's Super Mario World - the plucky plumber's first side-scrolling adventure for the 16-bit
Running on Faith: Eric Clapton's 'Unplugged' Gets Remixed and Expanded
Eric Clapton's most transformative late-career work will be itself transformed this spring. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer will reissue an "enhanced" edition of 1992's live album Unplugged, boasting a slightly reorganized and expanded 2CD or 2LP sequence, a brand-new mix and highlights from a never-before-heard audio interview with Clapton discussing the songs in his set shortly before playing them in that session. It'll be available May 9 through Surfdog Records, to which Clapton has been
Takin' on a New Direction: Tina Turner's 'Private Dancer' Set for 40th Anniversary Box Set
The album that unquestionably coronated Tina Turner as the Queen of Rock and Roll will be celebrated with a new deluxe box set this spring: 1984's blockbuster Private Dancer. Available March 21, the album - featuring the hits "What's Love Got to Do with It," "Better Be Good to Me," the scintillating title track and more - will be reissued as a 5CD/Blu-ray deluxe box packed with rare B-sides, remixes, additional studio material from the Private Dancer era (including the unreleased "Hot for You
In Memoriam: Garth Hudson (1937-2025)
This morning, it was announced that Garth Hudson, 87, had died in a Woodstock, New York nursing home. Hudson was the last surviving member of The Band, and with his passing, an era has come to a close. Though best known for his virtuosic organ playing, Hudson was a multi-instrumentalist who brought various colors to The Band's rootsy, organic brand of Americana. Hudson's sound tapped into the many veins of American popular music and could, by turns, conjure a raucous revival, a whimsical
What's It All About: Verve to Release Long-Lost 1967 Concert from Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald ushered in 1967 with a new label affiliation; she had decamped Verve for the Capitol label where she would release two albums - one of hymns, and the other of traditional Christmas carols - that year. In concert, Ella was in a period of transition. While rewarding her audiences with the classic standards they expected, she was also experimenting with newer material from the pop-rock songbook. On February 28, Ella's once and future home of Verve will release The Moment of

Roth's solo career began four decades ago
Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown: Original Soundtrack Recording
The Lee Mendelson family continues its series of debut releases from the Peanuts animation library with this premiere audio release of the score for 1975's Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown. The 50th anniversary release includes Vince Guaraldi's complete 22-cue score plus eight never-before-heard bonus tracks. Guaraldi was joined on the sessions by Seward McCain on electric bass and Vince Lateano on drums for such treats as "Heartburn Blues" and an updated version of "Linus and Lucy." The album
In Memoriam: Peter Yarrow (1938-2025)
When Bob Dylan famously took the stage at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and "plugged in" - an event dramatized at the climax of the Golden Globe-nominated film A Complete Unknown - the friendly face serving as emcee tried mightily to calm the fiercely divided crowd. Though his screen time in director James Mangold's film is minimal, Nick Pupo makes an impression as that beleaguered host: one Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul, and Mary. The folk trio was part of the same managerial stable as Dylan

Holiday Gift Guide Review: Joni Mitchell, "Archives: Volume Four (1976-1980)" and "The Asylum Albums (1976-1980)"
Earlier this year, Joni Mitchell brought her now-famous Joni Jam shows to the Hollywood Bowl for two sold-out evenings. A little more than 45 years ago, Mitchell closed out her North American tour with a series of shows some fifteen minutes away from the Bowl at the Greek Theatre; a selection from that concert closes the fourth volume of the Joni Mitchell Archives series of box sets. The Bowl shows proved another triumph for the artist who's now widely recognized for the innovations that
It Had Better Be Tonight: Quartet Records Celebrates Henry Mancini with "Pink Panther" Premiere Plus "Darling Lili" and More
April 16, 2024 marked what would have been the 100th birthday of Henry Mancini (1924-1994). With over 125 films and 90 albums to his credit (not to mention television shows, stage productions, and more!), the late composer's richly melodic music is still very much a part of the American cultural tapestry. Spain's soundtrack specialist label Quartet Records wasn't about to let the Mancini centennial go unnoticed. The label has delivered four new Mancini releases just in time for the holidays,
Holiday Gift Guide Review: 'Mary Poppins: 60th Anniversary Collection'
I. In Every Job That Must Be Done, There is An Element of Fun When you're a child - no matter where you're from, or how perceptive you may be about such things - it's easy to get a sixth sense about something you watch or read and just feel is different from the rest of what you've watched or seen. The Wizard of Oz is that way for many people. So too is Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers' series of books about a magical nanny that was adapted into a colorful musical film by Walt Disney Studios in 1964.
Holiday Gift Guide Review: The Beatles, "1964 U.S. Albums in Mono"
Any Time at All Did The Beatles save rock and roll? If John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr didn't save the still-young form, they certainly gifted it with a reinvigorating, exhilarating jolt of musical euphoria the likes of which hadn't been seen before - and hasn't been duplicated since. The scene was early 1964. Buddy Holly was long gone, and the big hits had dried up - at the moment, at least - for Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. Elvis had served his
The Alternate "Judy" Album: Unreleased Session Takes and More
The folks at High Definition Tape Transfers have unearthed a clutch of alternate takes from Judy Garland's 1956 Capitol album, Judy. These takes from those March 1956 sessions arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle form the basis of this new digital release (also available on CD-R). Judy remains one of Garland's master classes in vocal interpretation - aided, in no small part, by Riddle's sympathetic charts - and so it's fascinating to gain a glimpse into her process with early versions of
The Man with the Golden Gun / Moonraker
La-La Land is closing out 2024 with an amazing pair of expanded releases: lovingly-restored John Barry scores to James Bond films The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Moonraker (1979), both reissued for their 50th and 45th anniversaries. Golden Gun, Roger Moore's second go-round as Ian Fleming's Agent 007, featured a Barry score with its now-standard pop song heard in the film's opening title sequence: a melodramatic number with lyrics by Don Black sung by "To Sir, with Love" singer Lulu.
Soundtrack Watch: Varese and La-La Land Bow Their Final Score Surprises, from Blade to Bond
When La-La Land Records announced a bunch of big archival score titles for the beginning of November instead of their usual calendar-closing Black Friday announcement, it was safe to assume there were no more surprises coming from the label this year. Once again, that turned out to be quite untrue: in a reprise of last year's Christmas Day shocker and a follow-up to their reissue of Goldfinger in October, the label has announced two more titles for 2024: a pair of lovingly-restored John Barry

May the Funk Be With You: Cherry Red's Robinsongs Boxes Up Five Discs of George Duke
George Duke (1946-2013) wore many hats throughout his long and varied career: keyboardist, composer, producer, arranger, singer. His solo discography encompassed 40 albums while his collaborations included LPs with such jazz luminaries as Jean-Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, and Dexter Gordon. He produced records for A Taste of Honey, Sister Sledge, Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, and Smokey Robinson. Jazz was only part of the George Duke story, as his

Ike's Mood: Isaac Hayes' "Hot Buttered Singles 1969-1972" Arrives from Ace
Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks? If you answered "Shaft," you're damn right! When Isaac Hayes picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1972 for the "Theme from Shaft," he was only the third African-American to win an Oscar - and the first in the field of music. Shaft remains the best-selling album in the Stax Records catalogue and one of the most successful soundtracks of all time; for Isaac Hayes, it was a triumph that built on the
