Guitarist/vocalist Gerry Shephard, bassist/vocalist John Springate, drummers Pete Phipps and Tony Leonard, and horn players John Rossall and Harvey Ellison came together in 1972

Something Special: Cherry Red Collects Lloyd Webber, Rice-Produced Psych-Rockers Tales of Justine

February 8, 2017 By Joe Marchese 1 Comment

Tales of Justine

To collectors of rare psychedelia, Tales of Justine is known for one lone single on the HMV label.  The band's lone platter of "Albert" b/w "Monday Morning" came and went in October 1967.  Its lead singer, David Daltrey (thought to be a distant cousin of The Who's Roger) went on to sing the title role on the original concept album of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - no surprise, as Lloyd Webber orchestrated and Rice produced the band's

"'Like peas in a pod and birds of a feather,'" sing Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer in the album's title song.  This self-description has a bull's-eye accuracy; Bobby and Johnny are indeed 'two of a kind.'" So began the original liner notes for 1961's Two of a Kind, the Atco LP that paired one of America's all-time greatest vocalists (and one heck of a songwriter!) with one of its all-time greatest songwriters (and one heck of a performer!).  On March 24, Omnivore Recordings will reissue Two of a

In 2010, shortly after ending a 13-year breakup, the Seattle grunge outfit released Telephantasm, a career-spanning compilation. A year later, Live on I-5 chronicled their last tour from 1996. In 2013 (a year after the release of King Animal, the group's sixth studio album), the band's 1990 compilation Screaming Life/Fopp (comprised of their first

Muhammad Ali The Greatest

When Muhammad Ali died on June 3, 2016 at the age of 74, his immortality had already been long guaranteed.  President Barack Obama summed up the feelings of many when he proclaimed, "Muhammad Ali was America.  He will always be America.  What a man.  What a spirit.  What a joyous, mighty champion."  It was no accident that history's only three-time lineal heavyweight champion, the man born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., was nicknamed "The Greatest."  That moniker also was used for the title of the
