Annie OLC

The sun will come out tomorrow...because that's the release date for Stage Door Records' world premiere CD release of the Original London Cast Recording of Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse, and Martin Charnin's beloved musical Annie. A little over a year after its smash, Tony Award-winning debut on Broadway, Annie opened in the West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre (today the home of Hamilton). While original star Andrea McArdle repeated her performance for the first 40 performances, the role of

I'm a Believer: 7a Records Brings Micky Dolenz's "Live in Japan" to CD, DVD, and LP

February 24, 2020 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Micky Dolenz Live in Japan

Last year, 7a Records - the label dedicated to all things Monkees - chronicled the early 1980s rise of Monkeemania in Japan with the release of Davy Jones' Live in Japan. On May 8, 7a will celebrate another Monkee solo tour from that era with Micky Dolenz's own Live in Japan. Like Davy's entry, Micky's release will be available in CD/DVD and vinyl LP formats. Early 1982 saw Dolenz make the trip to Japan where he embarked on his first tour as a solo artist. Much as Jones had adopted the

All For Freedom and For Pleasure: Deluxe Tears For Fears Albums Come Back Into Print

February 12, 2020 By The Second Disc 5 Comments

Big Chair deluxe reissue

To mark the 35th anniversary of Tears For Fears' most successful album, 1985's Songs From The Big Chair, UMC has announced that both deluxe box set editions of the British duo's first two albums will go back into print this year. One of the most potent one-two punches from an act in the '80s, Tears For Fears burst on the scene with 1983's The Hurting, a moody, icy album blending elements of rock and electronic music. Formed around singer/songwriters Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith (who also

Play Don't Worry: Mick Ronson's Post-Bowie Recordings Anthologized On New Box

February 10, 2020 By Joe Marchese 7 Comments

Mick Ronson Only After Dark

The late Mick Ronson (1946-1993) was inextricably linked with David Bowie, playing with the superstar during his pre-fame days in The Hype and then as a Spider from Mars supporting Ziggy Stardust. But while Ronno's powerful licks still reverberate from his time with Bowie - on albums including The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars, Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane, The Man Who Sold the World, Pin Ups, and Lou Reed's Transformer - he left behind a rich legacy of music in other

Timi Yuro Make the World Go Away

Australia's Playback Records label returned to the scene in 2019 with a pair of new releases and the promise of more to come.  Today, we're looking at those new titles from Curtis Mayfield and Timi Yuro! As a writer, producer, and artist - both solo and with The Impressions - Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) was one of the foremost exponents of Chicago soul. He penned such favorites as Jan Bradley's "Mama Didn't Lie" and Major Lance's "The Monkey Time," not to mention such Impressions hits as

January 23, 2020 By Sam Stone Leave a Comment

Donnas GoldMedal

Real Gone Music is at it again with a slate of overlooked classics due for reissue on vinyl this February and March.  First up, there's The Donnas' Gold Medal, a power-pop favorite from 2004 that features the radio hit "Fall Behind Me."  The Butch Walker-produced album marked a new direction for the band as they embraced a '70s-inspired psychedelic sound evoked visually by the very groovy artwork.  Due on February 28, Real Gone's black-and-gold splatter vinyl edition will reproduce all the

Ace Round-Up, Part One: London American and Westbound Records Anthologies

January 23, 2020 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

London American Label 1967

Having previously chronicled 1956-1966 over eleven volumes, Ace has returned to its London American Label series for a last (?) hurrah. The London American Label Year by Year: 1967 is packed with 28 stellar selections to illuminate a year in which the label was in steadfast decline. London had long been the destination for great American records, but the major U.S. companies were launching their own U.K. arms and declining to license to London. This led London to release fewer 45s from

Another Time, Another Place: Stage Door Expands Broadway's "Kwamina" For 2-CD Deluxe Edition

January 22, 2020 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Kwamina OBC Deluxe

On January 31, Stage Door Records will revisit a short-lived yet ambitious 1961 Broadway musical from the co-writer of Damn Yankees and The Pajama Game. For his first musical since the baseball-centric Damn Yankees, composer-lyricist Richard Adler (working solo following the 1955 death of his partner Jerry Ross) turned his attention to a very different subject. Kwamina (which translates to "born on Sunday") recounted the (fictional) life story of Peter Kwamina Mwalla, the son of a West African

November 26, 2019 By Joe Marchese 4 Comments

The Doors The Soft Parade 50th

Tell all the people that you see/Follow me... With those words penned by bandmate Robbie Krieger, Jim Morrison invited listeners to the world of The Doors' fourth studio album, The Soft Parade. Originally released on July 18, 1969, it was the fourth consecutive top ten smash for Messrs. Morrison, Krieger, Manzarek, and Densmore, but in the ensuing years it's also become one of the group's most divisive - primarily for its extensive use of orchestral arrangements. To mark its fiftieth

November 14, 2019 By Sam Stone 2 Comments

TheClash LondonCallingScrapbook

When The Clash released their third studio effort, London Calling in December 1979, they unleashed an instant classic. The double album -- with its diverse blend of punk, reggae, rockabilly, ska, R&B and jazz -- was quickly heralded as a high-water mark for the band and for punk music. John Rockwell of The New York Times wrote in 1980 that London Calling "reveals depths of invention and creativity barely suggested by the band's previous work." The same yearm Down Beat 's Michael Goldberg

Shadows and Reflexions: High Moon Records Collects Rarities from Curt Boettcher and Friends

November 7, 2019 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Curt Boettcher Looking for the Sun

High Moon Records' new collection from Curt Boettcher and Friends, Looking for the Sun, takes its title from a 1968 Boettcher production for singer-songwriter Gordon Alexander. Given Boettcher's participation, one might expect the song to be a dreamy SoCal pop fantasia with richly layered harmonies. But instead it's a rather sparse, dark rumination with an acid coffeehouse feel. Alexander, in the song at least, doesn't find the sun, and arguably, neither did Curt Boettcher in his lifetime. But

Henry James' 1903 novel The Ambassadors told the story of Lewis Lambert Strether, a Massachusetts man sent to Paris by his widowed fiancée to retrieve her son from the clutches of a woman there. Once in Paris, Strether discovers some truths about himself, shattering his preconceived notions of the situation. Gee, But It's Good to Be Here: Stage Door Releases "Lost Broadway 1956-57"

August 1, 2019 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Lost Broadway 1956 1957

For the second volume in its Lost Broadway series of 2-CD sets, the U.K.'s Stage Door Records label has turned its attention to the years 1956 and 1957.  Musical hits during the 1956-1957 and 1957-1958 seasons included Bells Are Ringing, Li'l Abner, West Side Story, and The Music Man, but Stage Door's attention doesn't lie with those smashes but rather with the largely-forgotten, but certainly worthy, shows that haven't received nearly as much love over the years.  Like the first volume (which
