On March 29, The Zombies will take the stage at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to celebrate their long overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The time has never been better to revisit the band's catalogue, a hugely influential one despite its small size. Rediscovering The Zombies has been made easier with the recent release of two deluxe 5-LP vinyl box sets. For the U.S., Varese Vintage has issued The Complete Studio Recordings, while in the group's native U.K., Demon Music Group

Light My Fire: Legacy Brings Unheard José Feliciano Concert to Digital and Streaming with "Live 1967"
Over the last several months, Legacy Recordings has been quietly releasing gems from the vault and reissuing overlooked titles from the Columbia, RCA Victor, Arista, Bang, Monument, Ode, and Epic vaults as part of a digital music series. While our primary focus at The Second Disc remains with physical media, periodically we will shed some light on the best of these digital compilations and reissues, such as this previously unreleased live recording from one of the best guitarists and
Too Wild To Tame: Meat Loaf, Ian Hunter, Ronnie Spector, and More Collected on "Cleveland Rocks"
"Cleveland Rocks" is the name of one of Ian Hunter's best-loved compositions. First released in 1979, it's since became the de-facto anthem of the city, a rock proclamation whose title has always rung true. Cleveland's rock scene during the '70s was largely championed by Steve Popovich, a former Cleveland resident who ended up being the head of A&R at Epic. In mid-1976, he left the corporate rock world and headed back home to Cleveland, where he set up Cleveland International Records, part

Ace Records has released a number of splendid Motown collections in recent years, but now the label is taking a different approach to the music of Hitsville, USA. As Motown celebrates its landmark 60th anniversary, On the Detroit Beat: Motor City Soul - U.K. Style 1963-1967 brings together 24 diverse British interpretations of Motown classics, making for a potent reminder that the Sound of Young America was, truly, international. How Can I Keep From Singing: Pete Seeger's Centennial Celebrated With "The Smithsonian Collection," 6-CD Box Including Previously Unreleased Music
May 3rd will mark 100 years since the birth of Pete Seeger. He was a musician of incalculable influence, an activist, lyricist, banjo picker, and, most significantly, a unifier of the masses. Like a Johnny Appleseed of music, Pete Seeger spent his life spreading music to all that would listen. From "We Shall Overcome" and "If I Had A Hammer," and "The Bells of Rhymney," to "Turn! Turn! Turn!" "Wimoweh," and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," Seeger left an indelible mark on music history that
Review: "Music from Vanilla Sky" and "Orange County: The Soundtrack" LPs From Real Gone
Real Gone Music has recently given soundtrack lovers and vinyl aficionados something to talk about with two new color vinyl reissues of turn-of-the-millennium soundtracks: Music from Vanilla Sky (on "blue cloud" vinyl) and Orange County: The Soundtrack (on orange vinyl). The plots of both films are tied to the music within. The soundtrack for the far-out Vanilla Sky shifts moods and tones while maintaining some sense of cohesion as it takes listeners from classic rock to folk, trance and
Let's Hope For Peace: John and Yoko's "Wedding Album" Back on CD and LP in March
Yesterday, on the occasion of her 86th birthday, avant-garde artist and musician Yoko Ono announced a new edition of Wedding Album, the third of her collaborative experimental albums with John Lennon. It will be released by Secretly Canadian and Chimera Music on March 22, just over 50 years after the pair's marriage. The reissue is part of the ongoing Yoko Ono Reissue Series, which has so far brought Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins (1968), Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions
Soundtrack Watch: Intrada Expands 'An American Tail,' La-La Land Releases Scores by Zimmer and Legrand
Almost halfway through February, three soundtracks from titans of film composing have been released by the fine folks at Intrada and La- La Land Records. On Monday, Intrada's latest archival soundtrack was announced: an expansion of James Horner's score to the hit An American Tail. Directed by Don Bluth (The Secret of NIMH, All Dogs Go To Heaven) and produced by Steven Spielberg, this movie--one of the few mainstream animated films of the '80s not produced by Disney--tells the story of Fievel
It Won't Be Long: The Gun's 1968 Debut Coming To Vinyl From Real Gone
British hard-rockers The Gun burst onto the scene in 1968 with a self-titled debut that established its members as new forces in rock. Gun was an album of firsts: not only was it the group's inaugural LP, but it was also the starting point for Adrian and Paul Gurvitz (or Curtis, as they're named here), who would later found Three Man Army with Tony Newman and Buddy Miles, and The Baker-Gurvitz Army with Ginger Baker. It was also the first album to feature cover art by celebrated artist Roger
Spotlight On Nicole Croisille: "Il Était Une Fois...Nicole"
French singer and actress Nicole Croisille can be safely described as a national treasure in her homeland, but her fame has extended to international shores. One listen to her recordings, and it's easy to see why. She's perhaps most famous as the female voice of composer Francis Lai's irresistibly catchy "A Man and a Woman" ("Un homme et une femme") opposite Pierre Barouh from the 1966 film of the same name. (Croisille had a solo, translated as "Today It's You," on the soundtrack as well, and

Rockin' The Servers: Ben Folds' Myspace Concert On The Way From Real Gone
Ah, Myspace...for folks of a certain generation, the name alone brings back memories of friend requests from Tom, WordArt GIFs, and other mementos of pre-Facebook socialization. But aside from all that, Myspace was (and, in some ways, still is) a haven for independent music. Let's rewind to 2006. By August, over 100 million people were using the platform, and in October, the platform launched its first-ever live webcast. The star? Ben Folds. Joined by an audience small enough to fit into
Something To Make You Happy: Cherry Red Reissues "Dave Mason and Cass Elliot"
Cherry Red has recently re-pressed a gem from two shining talents of the early '70s Laurel Canyon scene: Dave Mason & Cass Elliot, a title that was previously released on their now-dormant Rev-Ola imprint in 2008. Both performers had made names for themselves previously, but when they met up for their one and only collaboration the results were a testament to their considerable musical skills. Dave Mason was no stranger to the music industry when he and Cass Elliot, of The Mamas and The

Invitation: John Coltrane's First Year Celebrated With "Coltrane '58: The Prestige Recordings"
The year 1958 was a breakout one for saxophone legend John Coltrane. It marked the year when Coltrane - already well-established as a talented sideman - began to make a name for himself as a solo musician and developed his signature "sheets of sound" style while exploring many other routes. Now, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Prestige label, Coltrane's 1958 recordings will be celebrated on a new box set from Craft Recordings. Due for release on March 29, Coltrane '58: The Prestige

Review: Kate Bush, "Remastered in Vinyl" Boxes 1 and 2
Late last year, Parlophone unveiled a series of lavish box sets on both CD and vinyl collecting the complete works (to date) of Kate Bush. The enigmatic singer-songwriter oversaw the remastering of these sets as well as their visual presentations; indeed, each album has been newly adorned with the logo of her own Fish People label. Today, we're taking a look at the first two vinyl box sets! The four LPs of Remastered in Vinyl 1 takes listeners from The Kick Inside (1978), housed in its

Still Defying Gravity: "Wicked" Turns 15, Celebrates with Cast Album Reissue
"No one mourns the wicked," goes the opening song of Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz's musical Wicked. But the musical, which celebrated its 15th anniversary on Broadway in 2018 and was recently crowned the sixth longest-running Broadway musical of all time, won't have any need for mourners any time soon. "The Untold Tale of the Witches of Oz" is still going strong and shows no signs of slowing down. Its fresh perspective on The Wizard of Oz and intricate backstory of both The Land of Oz

Short Takes: Dusty, Bowie, Walker Brothers Salute Ivor Raymonde; Streisand, Sinatra Featured on "Mrs. Maisel"
Last year, the Bella Union label released a collection that fell under the radar. Happily, we here at Second Disc HQ have discovered Paradise: The Sound of Ivor Raymonde, available in 1-CD, 2-LP, and digital formats. The name of Raymonde will surely be familiar to fans of Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, or The Walker Brothers, but those are only three of the artists with whom the late producer-arranger-conductor worked his magic. Paradise, co-curated by his son Simon Raymonde of Bella Union
