Blues guitarist John Hammond made his debut on Vanguard in 1964 and recorded four albums between that and the next year. By 1967, he had signed with Atlantic for one album. As often happens in these cases, Vanguard put together an album of outtakes which became Mirrors, also released in 1967. The record contains both acoustic and electric material with Hammond being backed on the electric side by members of The Band. This is Hammond's only Vanguard album which has never before appeared on
Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo
Real Gone brings Sandy Bull's 1963 debut Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo to CD for the very first time. A multi-instrumentalist, Bull is accompanied only by drummer Billy Higgins (who had accompanied Ornette Coleman) on the record. The first side was taken up completely by "Blend," a 22-minute composition by Bull which incorporates world-music influences. While not a success at the time, Fantasia would be credited with influencing the world music movement and psychedelia. Dig?
Christmas Sing-Along with Mitch: Expanded Edition
In 1958, Mitch Miller & The Gang released one of their most enduring albums: the original Christmas Sing-Along with Mitch featuring rousing renditions of beloved carols including "Silent Night," "Deck the Halls," "The First Noel" and "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear." Surprisingly, this classic LP-which went to No. 1 on the charts and hit the Top Ten for three straight years after that--has never seen a complete, authorized reissue on CD anywhere in the world. Now, this family sing-along
Review: David Bowie, "Who Can I Be Now? 1974-1976"
Who Can I Be Now? asks the title of Parlophone's second in a series of elegant, chronologically-assembled box sets dedicated to the late David Bowie's oeuvre. Indeed, Bowie might have made that query as he reinvented himself in fashion and music from album to album. The twelve discs comprising Who Can I Be Now? span the brief period of 1974-1976 during which time Bowie was riding high on both sides of the Atlantic with his genre- and gender-bending brand of theatrical rock. This set, every
A Swingin' Safari: El Reissues Classics From James Last, Bert Kaempfert, Bernard Herrmann
Cherry Red's El imprint has recently turned its attention to a trio of disparate composer-conductors. Happy Sounds Forever reissues the 1963 album from James Last, the king of "happy music," and adds selections from the catalogue of Bert Kaempfert ("Strangers in the Night") to round out the disc. On the other end of the spectrum, the label also has The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann, a collection dedicated to film score maestro and Alfred Hitchcock's most notable musical

Review: Fleetwood Mac, "Mirage: Deluxe Edition"
When Fleetwood Mac entered the Château d'Hérouville studio outside Paris at the dawn of the 1980s, the band had one goal in mind: to create a commercial pop success in the mold of their record-breaking Rumours. Not everyone in the quintet was sold on this goal, necessarily, especially after the quantum leap forward from Rumours into the beautiful madness that was Tusk. But while Tusk sold four million copies, it couldn't help but be viewed as a disappointment after the world domination of its
