Following the recent reissue of Sweet Southern Soul by Lou Johnson (watch this space for a review soon!), Run Out Groove is staying in a soulful bag with the latest addition to its catalogue: Bettye LaVette's The 1972 Muscle Shoals Sessions! This brand-new, 1-LP collection, voted on by the fans, will prove the first time any of these scorching soul tracks from a remarkable artist have ever been released on vinyl. The soul survivor has recorded for countless labels over the years, including
Dropsy Cure Weather: Kritzerland Reissues "The Grass Harp" with Barbara Cook, Karen Morrow
The Babylove Miracle Show is back in town. Kritzerland has announced the reissue of the 1971 original cast recording of composer Claibe Richardson and lyricist-librettist Kenward Elmslie's The Grass Harp, the cult favorite musical that played seven performances at the Martin Beck Theatre (today, the home of Kinky Boots). Based on the novella and subsequent play by Truman Capote, the musical told the tale of spinster sisters Dolly (Barbara Cook) and Verena (Ruth Ford). Verena becomes
The Trick Is To Keep Breathing: Garbage To Expand 'Version 2.0'
Garbage has announced a reissue of their sophomore album, 1998's Version 2.0. This follows the 2015 reissue of the band's debut and is, like that release, multi-tiered with releases on CD and vinyl. It's due on June 22. Originally released on Herb Alpert's Almo Sounds in North America and on Mushroom Records elsewhere, Version 2.0 made it to No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and has since gone on to earn platinum status. The darkly-tinged album from Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve
Sign of the Times: Cherry Red Collects "The Very Best of Tappan Zee Records"
The story of Tappan Zee Records is very much the story of Bob James. The versatile keyboardist, arranger and producer established the Tappan Zee label in 1977 to maximize the crossover success he had already experienced at Creed Taylor's CTI label. Cherry Red and Robinsongs' new 2-CD, non-chronologically arranged collection The Very Best of Tappan Zee Records presents an appealing cross-section of Tappan Zee's finest work from artists like James, Richard Tee, Earl Klugh, and Steve Khan. The
"Nigel Lived" Again: Intervention Brings Murray Head's Rock Concept Album to CD and SACD
Few artists have bridged the worlds of rock and theatre as successfully as Murray Head. Singing the music of others, actor-singer Head scored two major hits on both sides of the Atlantic with 1973's "Superstar" from Jesus Christ Superstar and 1984's "One Night in Bangkok" from Chess. Far lesser known, however, is his discography as a singer-songwriter. Head imbued his own compositions with the same vibrant life as those famous songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny

My Human Gets Me Blues: Third Man Readies Vault Package For Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica"
It's fair to say that there's never been an album quite like Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica - and this time, it's complete with, well, a trout mask replica! The singular 1969 album is being reissued as part of Third Man Records' Vault series. The 36th such set, due in June, is Trout Mask Replica, with subscriptions open until
Land of a Thousand Dances: Ace Salutes Music of 1965, Plus Rock Instrumentals and Spanish Pop
Ace Records rightfully has a reputation for its top-notch collections, and three recent releases are no exception to that rule. Jon Savage's 1965: The Year The Sixties Ignited follows previous releases compiled for Ace by historian Savage covering the years 1966 and 1967. This latest volume, with 48 tracks on 2 CDs, explores how the various strains of pop music came together to awaken the culture: whether the power of Motown (the label had six number ones) or Bob Dylan (who inspired an
Love Is The Message: Cherry Red Collects MFSB's "Definitive Collection"
MFSB - a.k.a. Mother, Father, Sister, Brother (or a rather more off-color series of four words, depending on whom you ask) - remains one of the all-time great aggregations of studio musicians, right up there with The Funk Brothers, The Wrecking Crew, and The Nashville Cats. The legacy of the Philadelphia International group has just been celebrated by Cherry Red's Robinsongs imprint on a new 2-CD, 32-track anthology entitled The Definitive Collection. The talented, versatile musicians at the

The 3-CD Your Box Set Pet: The Complete Recordings 1980-1984, due May 25, rounds up all of the group's recordings for EMI and RCA during their heyday. After the breakup of The Sex Pistols, their manager, the controversial impresario Malcolm McLaren, was approached to manage Adam and the Ants. He took the job, but soon convinced three of the band members, Matthew

Fans of cast recordings can look forward to plenty of exciting releases due in the coming weeks! Kritzerland has recently announced two new limited edition titles! First up is a two-for-one release with a pair of classic television specials. NBC's 1973 presentation of Cole Porter in Paris starred Perry Como, Diahann Carroll, Connie Stevens and others in a rousing celebration of the legendary songwriter's work. It was directed by Martin Charnin (Annie) and featured arrangements by Como's
Sounds From Beyond: Cherry Red Collects Psych, Pop, Rock, and the 101 Strings (!) On New Box Set
I Said, She Said, Ah Cid: With this delightfully offbeat release, Cherry Red's Grapefruit label has turned in one of the year's most intriguing releases. Ah cid, or acid, is in the air on this trippy 3-CD jaunt through the vaults of Alshire Records, the California-based budget label best known for the long-running 101 Strings series. As the subtitle - The Exploito Psych World of Alshire Records 1967-1971 - indicates, this set is focused squarely on the brief period in which Al Sherman's
Life Is a Long Song: Jethro Tull Celebrates 50 Years with Two New Collections

Though the track listing provided doesn't appear
Like Someone in Love: Ace Collects Complete Charlie Rich at RCA
Charlie Rich (1932-1995) finally achieved superstardom when his laid-back readings of "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl" ascended in 1973 to the top spot of the Billboard Country chart and crossed over to Pop - the latter to Number One on that chart, too. Although those songs kicked off a new chapter in the career of the man known by that point as the Silver Fox (for his mane of gray hair and wizened appearance), Rich's repertoire could hardly be defined by their mellow sound.
"Goonies" R Good Enough to Launch Varese's Vinyl Webstore; Plus "Barbarella" and More!

In his lifetime, Buck Owens accrued
Review: Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, "Motel Shot" [Expanded Edition]
The story of Delaney and Bonnie is by now a famous one. The husband-and-wife team of Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett got their first recording contract in the soulful environs of Stax Records in 1969. The pair then briefly moved to Elektra (and were offered and accepted a contract at The Beatles' Apple Records before their prior association with Elektra negated it) before arriving at Atco in 1970 for their longest sustained recording contract. Though Delaney and Bonnie never achieved much in the

Down By the River: Real Gone Reissues Rare Blues-Rock from Barry McGuire and Roy Buchanan in May
Even though spring is now here, it doesn't feel like it in some parts of the U.S.! As the east coast is hit by its fourth major snowstorm of March, let's look ahead to hopefully warmer days of spring and a pair of Real Gone releases coming out May 4 in the blues-rock genre. First up is Live at Town Hall 1974 from Roy Buchanan. Guitarist Buchanan was famous for playing the Fender Telecaster with an effects-free technique and influencing many other musicians despite never having much solo
