When discussing the increasing amount of catalogue projects and compilations surrounding one Steven Patrick Morrissey, it's easy to turn his words against him. "Reissue! Repackage!" he sings with derision on The Smiths' "Paint a Vulgar Picture." "Re-evaluate the songs/Double-pack with a photograph/Extra Track (and a tacky badge)." Would the man who wrote and sang that song in 1987 have contempt for the man who, on this day, has reissued his first solo compilation, Bona Drag, 20 years on, with
Back to the Street
Earlier this year, E1 Music struck gold with Sesame Street: Old School Vol. 1 (1969-1974), a three-disc reissue of some long out-of-print albums recorded by the children's television show cast. It was a pleasant surprise for fans of the lovable Muppet citizens of Sesame Street, who've captivated audiences for 40 years and counting. On October 25, E1 continues the wave of reissues with Sesame Street: Old School Vol. 2, which will see three albums from the early, sunny days of the show put onto
Friday Feature: "The Karate Kid"
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDi3an8WgN4] There's probably no worse reminder of your own mortality than the idea of remaking a movie. "How long has it been since they made the original?" you wonder in silent horror. "Was it that long ago? Have people forgotten that quickly? Am I that old?" There's no accurate litmus test to determine when the best elapsed time between originals and remakes is. George Clooney's Ocean's 11 came out in 2001, 41 years after the original Rat Pack
The Burton-Elfman Monolith Emerges
It's not every day you get to talk about two major box sets in a 24-hour span. And this one makes the U.K. Black Sabbath box look like something thrown into a digipak. The Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box is ready to order. Sixteen CDs, a DVD, a 250-page book and a collectible USB drive, all loaded with a heap of unreleased music, demos, rarities and other jaw-dropping stuff. And it's literally enormous. Check out the size of it in this video; it looks like a box for
New U.K. Black Sabbath Box Set: What's to Be Cross About?
Since The Second Disc began, we've seen more than a bit of Black Sabbath reissues and remasters, all of them confined to the United Kingdom, where the band's catalogue is distributed by Universal Music Group's Sanctuary Records (Warner Bros. handles it in the U.S.). The latest British-only set has been announced, and it's a doozy. A new box, The Ozzy Years: Complete Albums Box Set, will make its way to U.K. record shops on November 15. It has exactly what it says: nine remastered Sabbath albums
Back Tracks: The Jam
The Jam were easily one of the best things to come from the U.K. punk-rock scene. This is an unusual consideration, given that nothing about the band really screamed punk-rock. The members of The Jam were polished in appearance and musical experience, and they were clearly influenced by American rock and R&B acts from Motown, Stax and Atlantic. They were as mod as one could get without joining the cast of Quadrophenia. But their sound had an edge that bands like The Clash and The Sex Pistols
Is the Time A-Changin' for Release of Mono Dylan on Vinyl?
The Bob Dylan section of Examiner.com reports "from a trusted source" that the vinyl edition of Dylan's forthcoming The Original Mono Recordings will be pushed back to December 7. Not sure who the source is, but Amazon's listing also has that December date. (The CD versions are still on track for October 19.) In other Dylan news, those who were waiting for confirmation on the promised Brandeis show as an Amazon exclusive now have their proof. Those who pre-order either The Witmark Demos
S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y! Rollermania Strikes Again in October
S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y! For many readers, that chant will undoubtedly conjure up images of a group of tartan-clad Scotsmen, whose catchy, hook-filled 45s led hordes of screaming teenagers and teenyboppers to the dance floor (alongside adults with discerning taste in irresistible pop music, of course!). The history of The Bay City Rollers is being celebrated by the fine folks of the U.K.’s Salvo Records with the October 4 release of a deluxe four-disc anthology they’ve quite accurately called
Come and Get It, In One Shot: The Apple Box Set Announced
After months during which EMI kept us all guessing, official specs were finally released for the Apple Records reissue campaign, and The Second Disc duly reported that information back on August 5. As with most projects related to The Beatles and/or Apple Corps, however, there were as many questions as answers, even after the “final” information had been posted on the official Apple website. For one thing, why downloads? Fans were sharply divided as to how they felt about the practice of
Polled as Love
We kick off the weekend with a poll for you, dear readers: with the myriad of options coming up for Experience Hendrix/Legacy's upcoming Jimi Hendrix box set, West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology, which one do you think you'll be picking up? Have fun voting! [polldaddy poll=3777262]
Don't Look Now, There's a Monkey on Your Back: "Faith" Reissue Delayed
In what may be the most potent anti-drug message for catalogue fans, George Michael's reissue of Faith has been postponed. The singer, recently jailed for eight weeks for driving under the influence of drugs, was to have seen his solo album - a landmark of '80s pop - reissued in several configurations on September 28. A Legacy spokesperson says the release has been delayed to next year. Stay tuned for more info as it develops.
...And These ARE the Contents of the CHIC Box Set
Hot off the presses, folks. Thanks to super-reader RoyalScam for the tip back in this post. Hit the jump for some good times!
This May Be the Contents of the CHIC Box: Or, Can Anyone Speak Japanese?
Thanks to funk ambassador Donald Cleveland for this tip: a Japanese Web site called Disk Union has published what looks like a preliminary track list for Warner France's upcoming CHIC box set. Though it's not final - and the other text, being loosely translated from Japanese to English, isn't quite coherent or more descriptive than anything else we've read, it looks like some genuine rarities are going to be in this set, including excerpts from one particularly tantalizing unreleased
How Does "West Coast Seattle Boy" Stack Up?
So, just in time for Christmas, Jimi Hendrix fans are getting rewarded for their patience (a good half-dozen or so CD/DVD reissues and only one compilation of unreleased material since Legacy Recordings took distributorship of the Experience Hendrix catalogue) with the full specs for West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology. This five-disc set includes a disc of rare tracks from Hendrix's days as an R&B sideman, three discs of what looks like almost entirely unreleased material
Queen Complete the Circle with Fourth Singles Box
The fourth and last box set in Queen's Singles Collection series will bow on October 18 in the U.K. from EMI/Parlophone. In this 13-disc set, which recreates vintage Queen 45s and CD singles (and only some material from 12" singles, making it a not-quite-complete set), the last chapter of the venerable rock band's career will be chronicled - from The Miracle (1989) and Innuendo (1991) to all the singles released after lead singer Freddie Mercury's death at the end of 1991. Expect a few rarer
UMe Brings the Goods in the U.K. with New Deluxe Editions
If you have a sinking suspicion that more and more reissues are going to come from foreign shores, the next batch of titles aren't going to convince you otherwise. Universal Music Enterprise's U.K. arm has announced several new deluxe edition titles from The Who, The Jam, Supertramp and Cast. First up, it looks like The Who's iconic Live at Leeds is getting the super-deluxe treatment in England on November 8 (a U.S. date has not been locked down). The set will include the complete Leeds show on
Dio Catalogue Info Coming Up from the Midnight Sea
It turns out the planned vintage live set coming from Dio was just the first of many planned catalogue titles to honor the late, great metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio. Rolling Stone reports a whole bunch of stuff is forthcoming from the newly-founded Niji Entertainment Group, a venture headed by Dio's widow, Wendy, who had been in the process of co-founding the label when her husband passed on. Beyond the already-mentioned Dio at Donington U.K.: Live 1983 and 1987, Niji will oversee a 180-gram
Matador's Box Set is a Nice Hand
Venerable indie label Matador Records has had one of the most consistently impressive rosters for newer music during their existence. The list includes Pavement, Interpol, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Sonic Youth, Liz Phair, Yo La Tengo, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and scores more. This month, as the label prepares a 21st anniversary celebration at the Palms Resort in Las Vegas, they will chronicle that successful run in Matador at 21, a six-disc box full of notable tunes from Matador
News Round-Up: Rhino Cuts, CSNY Live Speculation, XTC Vinyl and More
We hate to start the day off with some bad news, but Rhino is apparently about to experience another depressing surge of layoffs, trade publication Variety reports. From the looks of it, expect a smaller slate of physical titles - even the Handmade stuff, some of which was in the can for years, the article says - and more of an emphasis on digital catalogue maneuvers or (at the very least) more on-demand releases like the Tartare program. Graham Nash mentioned to Billboard about the speculated
It's Monkee-Mania: "Head" Soundtrack Expanded as Deluxe Box Set
Just a few short weeks ago on August 19, The Second Disc reported on the Criterion Collection release of the Monkees’ trippy cinematic opus, Head. At the end of that article, we opined, “Perhaps the success of this set will inspire Rhino Handmade to revisit the Head soundtrack as a deluxe edition should its Monkees reissue program continue.” Well, we didn’t even have to wait that long. Rhino Handmade has announced a three-disc deluxe box set of the soundtrack to Head and much, much more.
C'est CHIC, Indeed: More Nile Rodgers Box Set Details Released
If you've followed the legendary producer/CHIC co-founder Nile Rodgers on Facebook or Twitter, you've no doubt realized that he's been combing through his archives for some projects, including his autobiography and a forthcoming box set chronicling The CHIC Organization and its productions. Finally, news of the latter has broke from someone other than Rodgers himself: Rhino France, through their Facebook page, has issued the first details about Nile Rodgers Presents The CHIC Organization Vol. 1:
"TNG" Box Boldly Goes Where Few Have Gone Before
Film Score Monthly has announced its fifth box set, and like the others, it's quite an undertaking: Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Ron Jones Project collates 14 discs' worth of music from the famous television series plus a heap of other Trek goodies from composer Ron Jones. Jones, best known for some surprisingly notable scores to animated television works (including the Disney cartoons DuckTales and Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers along with turns on Family Guy), composed scores to 42
Rounder Records Adding Box Set to the Holiday Rush
Add another box set to the pile for this holiday season: The Rounder Records Story, an 87-track, four-disc chronicle of the Massachusetts-based indie folk label, celebrating its 40th year. The set includes tracks by notables names like Willie Nelson, NRBQ, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Rush, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, Bela Fleck and more. Pre-order it here and check the track list out after the jump.
Short Takes: Dylan Bonuses to Come with Bootlegs, Bernstein Box on the Way
A pair of notes from some Sony properties today: one focuses on a bonus with Bob Dylan's newest Bootleg Series release, the other is a big box coming from Sony devoted to one of America's greatest composers. Apparently, those who purchase The Bootleg Series Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos 1962-1964 from Amazon will get a bonus disc recorded at Brandeis University's First Annual Folk Festival in 1963. The reel-to-reel tape source had been in the collection of Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph Gleason.
Lennon Reissue Updates: "Power to the People," Kind Of
A few details have crossed the wires regarding the upcoming John Lennon reissue campaigns due for domestic release October 5. The aforementioned track lists for the new Power to the People: The Hits compilation, the Gimme Some Truth box set and the bonus discs in the John Lennon Signature Box we wrote about a few weeks ago is accurate (although the discs in Gimme Some Truth are presented in a different order - the set kicks off with the "Roots" disc thought to be Disc 4 then continues in proper
