Brian Wilson Playback

Brian Wilson turns 75 years young today - and hot on the heels of a well-received biopic and a record-breaking concert tour that continues through this fall, the legendary artist is looking back on his solo career for a new compendium arriving on September 22 from Rhino Records.  Playback: The Brian Wilson Anthology captures, via 18 tracks, the Beach Boy's extraordinary journey from his 1988 Sire Records solo LP debut through 2015's No Pier Pressure.  Two never-before-released tracks will also

Beach Boys Graduation Day 1966

As has become commonplace over the past several years due to the copyright laws in the U.K. and Europe, a couple of "copyright extension" releases came out at the end of 2016 to come in right at the deadline for 1966 recordings.  While sometimes these collections have taken physical form like the two large Bob Dylan box sets that have been released over the past couple of years, they are more often than not digital-only releases.  And in keeping with the traditions of the past several years,

Capitol 75

Capitol Records, the venerable label founded by Johnny Mercer with B.G. DeSylva and Glenn Wallichs and now a unit of Universal Music Group, turns 75 next year.  In celebration of this landmark anniversary, the label has announced three new initiatives. The first of these endeavors is The Capitol Records 75th Anniversary Collection, a series of 75 vinyl reissues from various genres curated by "noted music journalists, authors and other renowned creative figures."  The Beatles are represented

Monkees Good Times Plus

That chill in the air and the buzz in your favorite record store can only mean one thing: Record Store Day Black Friday is nearly upon us! On November 25, indie record retailers and labels great and small will partner together to issue dozens of exclusive packages you can't get anywhere else (except maybe eBay, after the fact, though we're not happy about that.) The vinyl boom refuses to end, but owing to the lesser size of the event in general, there don't seem to be as many titles as usual.

TAMI Show and Big TNT Show

While we normally concentrate on CD reissues here at The Second Disc, we do occasionally like to highlight other titles which we think may be of interest to our readers.  One such project, just announced from Shout! Factory, certainly qualifies:  a 2-disc Blu-ray set entitled the T.A.M.I. Show/The Big T.N.T. Show Collector's Edition due out on December 2. Directed by Steve Binder, T.A.M.I. Show (meaning either "Teenage Awards Music International" or "Teen Age Music International") was filmed

Becoming The Beach Boys

Just shy of fifty years after the release of the single of the same name, the good vibrations of The Beach Boys continue to resonate far outside of the band's native Southern California - in fact, they can be felt around the world.  Mike Love, currently leading the group for another endless summer of touring with Bruce Johnston and longtime sideman Jeffrey Foskett, is about to release his autobiography on September 13.  One month later, on October 11, I Am Brian Wilson: A Memoir arrives in

Best of Jeff Larson

More than fifty years have passed since John Phillips so vividly encapsulated the California myth with The Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'," but the Golden State continues to inspire artists with its promise of eternally sunny days.  The strains of "California music" are as varied as the state's regions, from surf to punk to psychedelia to country to metal.  Despite changing times and changing tastes, however, richly melodic pop-rock has never gone out of fashion in California.  Two

Becoming The Beach Boys

Before Pet Sounds, before SMiLE, heck, before "Surfin' USA," The Beach Boys were a scrappy family band with little but big dreams and tight harmonies.  Things happened quickly for brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine; in September 1961, the quintet first captured their voices together, and by the following May, they had signed a seven-year contract with major Capitol Records.  In the few months in between, The Beach Boys recorded nine songs

Pet Sounds 50

50 years have passed since the original release of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, yet it still stands alone in the rock canon.  The talents of Brian Wilson, Tony Asher, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Bruce Johnston coalesced in one unforgettable place and time to create music's most exquisite realization of both the exultant joy and beautiful melancholy of adolescence. It took until the compact disc era for Pet Sounds to be fully appreciated; the album wasn't certified

On May 16, 1966, one of the most acclaimed albums in pop/rock history was released: The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of this landmark album and it is being commemorated in several ways. Brian Wilson is embarking on a concert tour in a little under a week in which he and his band will play the album in its entirety for what's being billed as the last time. And it has just been revealed that a new box set is due to be released on June 10 by Capitol/UMe to join the

Bobby Gillespie Sunday

Among Ace Records' recent releases is a collection that just might make you scream - make that "Primal Scream" - with elation.  Bobby Gillespie Presents Sunday Morning Comin' Down is a mix CD curated by Primal Scream founder/Jesus and Mary Chain drummer.  The Glasgow-born singer/songwriter/musician has selected 20 of his favorite tracks for Ace, and the result is a set that not only illuminates Gillespie's influences as an artist but stands on its own with thematic and sonic coherence.  In

Beach Boys Live in Chicago 1965

Over the past several years since copyright laws were changed in the EU, it has become a tradition at the end of the year for record labels to release "copyright extension" releases featuring unreleased material from their biggest artists to protect their interests in said material.  Hot off the heels of a compilation of Motown unreleased material from 1965 comes another release in this vein from a group who has made this a yearly tradition:  The Beach Boys.  This last Friday, Capitol put up

Beach Boys Party Uncovered and Unplugged

Following the release of The Beach Boys Today! and Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) earlier in the year, Capitol Records was eager to make yet more Beach Boys music available for the 1965 holiday season.  The label urged Brian and the Boys into the studio to record Beach Boys' Party!, an album filled with loose versions of familiar favorites, complete with laughter and background talk.  Now, that LP filled with freewheeling good vibrations is getting a surprise 2-CD deluxe, expanded edition to

Carl Wilson Carl Wilson

Summer may now be over, but a number of Beach Boys-related releases aim to keep the summer alive.  Our very own Second Disc Records label teamed with Real Gone Music in September for a newly remastered and expanded reissue of Ricci Martin's Beached, the all-star album recorded by Dean Martin's son Ricci with co-producers Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche.  Now, Iconoclassic Records has announced next week's first-ever U.S. CD reissue of Carl's 1981 eponymous solo debut.  And if that's not enough,

Ricci Martin Beached

"I was living up the street from Carl Wilson and his wife Annie," Ricci Martin told me in July of this year. "I was over his house, playing his piano. And Carl said, 'God, I really like that! Did you write that?' And I said, 'Yeah, I wrote that!' And he said, 'How would you like to record that?' And I said, 'Of course, absolutely!'"  The song Ricci was playing was "Stop, Look Around," a shimmering slice of Southern California pop that would open his 1977 Epic Records album Beached.  Carl Wilson

Here Today The Songs of Brian Wilson

The title of Ace Records' recent collection is Here Today! The Songs of Brian Wilson, after one of those famous Wilson songs off The Beach Boys' 1966 Pet Sounds.  But the fact of the matter is - as this enjoyably diverse set proves over the course of its 25 tracks - Brian Wilson's music is not only here today, but will be here for many tomorrows. Unlike Ace's 2003 volume Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions, this anthology concentrates on Brian as songwriter.  But there are a couple of
