Review: "Bobby Bare Sings Shel Silverstein Plus" from Bear Family Records

October 21, 2020 By Joe Marchese 5 Comments

Bare Silverstein

Gather 'round, fellows, I'll tell you some tales... "If I had known what you were doing in the studio, I would have stopped it," Bobby Bare recalled RCA Victor's Jerry Bradley telling him upon hearing the singer's 1973 double album Sings Lullabys, Legends, and Lies.  Happily, Bradley had to live with the album that marked Bare's return to RCA after a brief sojourn to rival Mercury Records.  RCA's Nashville chief Chet Atkins wanted Bare back on the label, and gave him the freedom to create the

"I cut off my hair and I rode straight away, for that wild unknown country where I could not go wrong."  So sings Bob Dylan in "Isis."  It's a line fitting for the mercurial Dylan, especially in 1975 as he and his merry cohorts - both friends and musicians - embarked on a tour of North American cities large and small on the circus-like Rolling Thunder Revue. Back in 2019, we told you about Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.  Part concert document and part

In Memoriam: Mac Davis (1942-2020)

September 30, 2020 By Joe Marchese 4 Comments

Mac Davis I Believe in Music

On one of his most famous compositions, Scott "Mac" Davis sang, "I could just sit around making music all day long/As long as I'm making my music, ain't gonna do nobody no harm/And who knows, maybe I'll come up with a song..."  The singer-songwriter-actor never had difficulty coming up with a song, including that memorable one.  Davis, who died yesterday at the age of 78, recorded "I Believe in Music" on his second Columbia album in 1970, and the group Gallery took it up the charts in 1972.
