Just My Salvation: Vinyl Me, Please Collects Best of Stax’s Gospel Truth in New Box Set

When Memphis’ Stax Records launched its Gospel Truth imprint in 1972, its mission was simple: to “carry the message of today’s gospel to the people on the street.”  The label’s Al Bell worked closely with in-house radio guru/producer/songwriter Dave Clark and staffer Mary Peak Paterson to afford Gospel Truth the same level of promotion as Stax’s secular releases, and accessibility was the byword.  Bell paired traditional gospel talents with young artists well-versed in rock, funk, blues, and soul. Stax creative director Larry Shaw made sure that the imprint’s releases bore the same…

I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston

This new collection gathers together 14 hymns and spirituals recorded by the late Whitney Houston. Most of the songs stem from soundtracks, one of the few places she flexed her muscles within the genre (on 1992’s juggernaut The Bodyguard and more notably on 1996’s The Preacher’s Wife); six of the tracks are previously unreleased, and at least one was recorded in 1981, before Houston signed a deal with Clive Davis’ Arista Records. The set also includes a stirring cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” performed live on VH1 in the mid-’90s…

A New Testament: Whitney Houston Gospel Collection Announced

Whitney Houston’s skills as an R&B and pop singer made her a blockbuster act in the ’80s and ’90s, but the late singer had a deep, familial passion for gospel that she only partially explored during her too-brief career. A new compilation and documentary due in March will change that. I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston is a new 14-track collection featuring hymns and spirituals Houston recorded throughout her time as a professional singer. Most of the songs stem from soundtracks, one of the few places she…

I Saw the Light: BMG Collects Hank Williams’ Radio Gospel Performances on “I’m Gonna Sing”

I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin/Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night/Praise the Lord, I saw the light… Though Hank Williams is often remembered today as much for his hellraising ways as for his venerable songbook – a remarkable one that crossed genre lines via such stone-cold standards as “Hey, Good Lookin’,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” and “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love with You”) – he was brought up in the church and its music stayed with him for…

B.J. Thomas first reached the U.S. top 10 in 1966 with a heartfelt cover of his father’s favorite Hank Williams song, the plaintive ballad “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”  The Oklahoma-born, Texas-raised artist had his sights beyond just the country genre, however.  His always authentic and altogether compelling voice was equally at home in the genres of pop, R&B, rock and roll, contemporary Christian, bossa nova, and gospel.  He became a songwriter’s singer, bringing to vivid life the music and words of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Barry Mann and Cynthia…

Have Yourself a Merry Little Discmas…

Wow! And just like that, another year has flown by. Just a few weeks before The Second Disc hits its 12th anniversary(!), this Christmas Eve it is our custom to look back on the last 12 months and take some time to think fondly of the music, magic, memories and friends that made our lives worth living. As if last year wasn’t unconventional enough, 2021 packed more pop, clicks, skips and distortion than the most misguided vinyl pressings. We got vaccinated, we got boosted, we tentatively returned to concerts and live performances,…

Sweets for My Sweet: Cherry Red, SoulMusic Collect The Sweet Inspirations’ Atlantic Recordings on “Let It Be Me”

In its 1960s heyday, Atlantic Records was the destination for deeply-felt soul.  Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, and Wilson Pickett were just a handful of the artists there who defined the sound of soul music.  Lesser-known but no less significant were The Sweet Inspirations.  Today, the vocal quartet might be best-remembered as Elvis Presley’s preferred onstage backup group, but The King was just one of a staggering number of artists they supported – including the aforementioned artists and even Jimi Hendrix. But Atlantic rightfully believed that these talented singers didn’t have…
