September 15, 2020 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Hackers 25

Audiences and critics may not have fully understood Hackers when it was released exactly 25 years ago - but the cyber-cult classic continues to be a touchpoint in the public's early understanding of the nascent Internet. Next week, its original soundtrack is being expanded for its anniversary, complete with some surprising cameos from a classic rock legend. The film followed a group of young, elite, underground programmers who accidentally stumble upon a computer virus-assisted plot to

The Return of the Living Dead: Original Soundtrack

August 28, 2020 By

Return of the Living Dead 1

Real Gone has a limited vinyl reissue of the soundtrack to 1985's The Return of the Living Dead. Return's history and legacy is a little complicated. George A. Romero and John Russo wrote 1968's classic Night of the Living Dead.  After its release, the two parted ways, with Russo retaining the rights to use the title "Living Dead."  Romero, meanwhile, began a series of sequels beginning with Dawn of the Dead in 1978 (four more films through 2009's Survival of the Dead would follow). Russo wrote

Cujo: Original Soundtrack Album

August 28, 2020 By

Cujo

Stephen King's tale of a killer dog hit the big screen in 1983 with a score by composer Charles Bernstein.  But Bernstein's music was cut up for the film's final edit, and the score never received a commercial release until last year, when Intrada presented the music as recorded by Bernstein for a CD reissue. The tracklisting for Real Gone's edition presents the complete film score as presented on CD by Intrada, dropping the five alternate cues which were also included. This new vinyl reissue is

With the nation still fighting COVID-19, Record Store Day here in the U.S. looks a little - make that a lot - different this year.  The usual offerings have been split among three dates with Drop 1 taking place tomorrow, August 29, at your local independent record retailer.  Drop 2 is September 26, and Drop 3 is October 24.  Every retailer is handling the Drop a bit differently thanks to the necessary accommodations for social distancing, smaller crowds, and better safety precautions.  So please

Review: Joel McNeely, 'Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire'

August 19, 2020 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Star Wars Shadows of the Empire

For the 42 years Star Wars has been a pop cultural force, musical oddities have followed in the wake of its starship engines. Sure, legendary composer John Williams put an interstellar jazz number in the middle of his almost operatic score to the original 1977 film, but that didn't predict a chart-topping disco song, or Christmas albums, or quirky EDM, or various other ephemera in the ensuing decades. When Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire was released in 1996, amid a major comeback for that

Bandcamp Bonanza: Top Picks For Indie Music Makers' Sixth Monthly Event

August 7, 2020 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Long Neck

On March 20, as the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic was just starting to be understood, indie music retailer Bandcamp made the bold choice of waiving their share of revenue for artists and labels who were cancelling shows and delaying album releases left and right. The result was more music bought by more fans than any day on the site, a record broken on the first Friday of May. Bandcamp Fridays have since taken place in June and July - plus the first of an annual occurrence when the service

In Memoriam: Ennio Morricone (1928-2020)

good the bad the ugly

In the spring of 2004, my junior year of high school, I enrolled in an elective that was split between Theatre Arts one semester and Analyzing Cinema the next. One of the more polarizing films shown in class was Sergio Leone's epic Western The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - the class of 16 and 17-year-olds didn't entirely jibe with the lengthy takes, surreal logic (complete with characters surprised by events that couldn't be seen within the frame), or the score, which was firmly Western in terms

On July 3, 1985, mass audiences got to take a trip Back To The Future thanks to the year's top-grossing film. Peanuts Greatest Hits

On October 2, 1950, cartoonist Charles M. Schulz debuted Peanuts in seven newspapers, introducing the world in that first strip's four panels to Charlie Brown and his friends Shermy and Patty. Peanuts and its memorable cast of characters went on to inspire television specials, motion pictures, stage musicals, and countless merchandise items as well as numerous albums. This summer, Craft Recordings will celebrate 70 years of Peanuts with two vinyl reissues. On July 24, the label will release a
