The tenth volume of Hip-o Select's ongoing James Brown singles series is ready to order. The Singles Volume 10 collects each side of all the 45s J.B. released from 1975 to 1979. At a time when disco was taking hold of pop music's conscience, the Godfather of Soul soldiered on as the self-proclaimed "Minister of New Super Heavy Funk," and delivered just that with classics like "Get Up Offa That Thing," "Hot (I Need to Be Loved, Loved, Loved, Loved)," "Bodyheat" and "It's Too Funky in Here." Some
T.P. Goes to U.K. on New DVD
Here's a music DVD treat for you: Shout! Factory is releasing a live show from the vaults of the late, great Teddy Pendergrass. The former lead singer of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes was in rare form in this show recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon in early 1982. The soul serenader had already racked up five consecutive platinum records between 1975 and 1980 - one with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and four on his own - and had recently enjoyed his latest Top 5 R&B hit,
How "Cool" Is New Dean Martin Box Set?
Don't move those Bear Family boxes over quite yet, Dean Martin fans. Between 1997 and 2001, the German label issued four remarkable boxes collecting virtually every note ever recorded by Dean Martin not only for Capitol and Reprise (his two most famous label associations) but for Diamond, Embassy, Apollo, Warner Bros. and MCA. So what could a new box offer to collectors and fans? On June 7, Hip-o will release a two-CD box set dedicated to the perennially cool singer and swinger in a hardcover
U2 x 2: New Fan-Club CD to Explore Duets
Details for U2's latest fan-club release have been announced, and the band is bringing some very special guests for this disc. U2 Duals, continuing a tradition of fan-club releases that have included special CD singles, remix albums and vintage live shows, collates some of the group's most notable duets. From "When Love Comes to Town," the 1988 single featuring B.B. King, to a live show this past November with a guest appearance by Jay-Z, U2 have gotten around with multiple collaborators
Getting "Clue" Plus Some More Exciting La La Land News!
As promised, La La Land Records put the score to Clue up for order yesterday. The soundtrack to the comedy board game adaptation, composed by John Morris, is full of bonus content and limited to 3,000 copies and is yours to order here. (The track list is of course after the jump.) But that's not the only exciting La La Land news we have here at The Second Disc. Tomorrow afternoon, we're running an exclusive interview with the head of the label, MV Gerhard! He's going to talk about the great
Short Takes: Legacy's New Essentials, Concord's New Jazz Reissues and a Catalogue Score from Perserverance
Legacy's latest release schedule update promises three new titles in the Essential series: Paul Revere & The Raiders, Django Reinhardt and Eartha Kitt. All are going to be double disc sets, and specifically, the Raiders set (compiled by Bob Irwin of Sundazed Music) will feature some promo-only tracks and some mono single mixes. All are due on March 15. Concord has four new reissues of classic jazz titles also planned for March 15. They are Monk's Music (1958) by Thelonious Monk, Cal
New Neil Diamond Compilation: How Much Bang for Your Buck? (UPDATED 2/2)
Come this March, Neil Diamond won't be such a solitary man. Diamond will find plenty of stellar company when he’s inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 14. While Diamond has maintained his superstar status in both the recording studio and the concert stage for 45 years, chances are that the recordings he made for Bang Records between 1966 and 1968 were foremost on voters’ minds when choosing to induct the singer into the venerable hall. It’s during this period that Diamond
Would New Queen Reissues Ever Take on the World Someday?
For catalogue fans, the announcement of the track listings for the upcoming Queen reissues was the hot story of the week. New versions of the band's first five albums, each expanded with a host of bonus tracks, are due in the U.K. in March as part of the band's new licensing agreement with Universal Music Group - and there's plenty of room on the fence, because many have taken a stand for or against the sets. To this writer, the track lists probably could have been better - but can't they all
Getz Set for New Box from Hip-o Select
Hip-o Select kicks off 2011 with a new set of early works by Stan Getz. Quintets: The Clef & Norgran Albums is three discs of Getz in his first recordings for Verve founder Norman Granz's earliest labels. Five 10" LPs are represented here, alongside some single and EP tracks and three previously unreleased alternate takes. If you can believe it, the set marks the CD debut of much of this material as well. Order the set from the label now and have a look at the track lists after the jump.
The Dead Go to Meadowlands in New "Road Trips" Set
The first entry in The Grateful Dead's Road Trips series for the new year has been announced. Road Trips Vol. 4, No. 2: April Fools '88 is only the second Dead show ever released from that year, a year which was preceded by highlights on either side of the calendar. (The previous year saw the release of the band's Top 10 hit "Touch of Grey" and a tour with Bob Dylan; the next year saw a flurry of officially released live material.) This set captures, over three discs, the band's April 1, 1988
Doris Troy to Be Rediscovered on New Compilation
Interest in Doris Troy was piqued late last year, when her one LP for Apple Records was included in EMI's series of Apple reissues. Now, U.K. label Kent is offering fans another step in discovering the "Just One Look" singer on CD: I'll Do Anything: The Doris Troy Anthology 1960-1996. This heavily-packed single-disc anthology includes an equal amount of hits and rarities, from Troy's early years as a little-known soul singer on many small labels, to her beloved time on Atlantic in the
The Show That Never Ends: ELP Catalogue Moving Abroad with New Compilation
One of the big music business stories today is that Pink Floyd ended their disputes with EMI and signed a new deal to keep their catalogue with the beleaguered label. However, another '70s rock group - the prog-rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer - recently jumped from one label to another, and the first fruits of their new partnership are about to be released. ELP inked a worldwide deal with Sony in March - having initially signed with Island/Manticore in the U.K. and Cotillion/Atlantic in
Bob Marley to "Live Forever" on New Live Set
Arguably, Bob Marley already is living forever, at least musically. His catalogue has been treated well through various reissues and compilations from Island Records since his death in 1981; the compilation Legend remains the highest-selling reggae album in history, with sales in excess of 14 million copies in the U.S. alone. With the 30th anniversary of Marley's passing imminent, Tuff Gong/UMe preps another treat from the vault: his last recorded concert, in support of the Uprising album. Live
Legacy Readies New Playlists for 2011
Legacy Recording has got another batch of titles in the long-running Playlist series for next month. The line-up is particularly diverse, stretching from soul (Lou Rawls, Patti Labelle) to more recent pop acts (Five for Fighting, Ace of Base, Bowling for Soup) and even touching on some gospel acts (including a spiritual disc from Willie Nelson). They're not as heavy on the rarities, although some of the sets have some appealing rare cuts; Mr. Mister's compilation will feature four tracks from
Miles Davis' Wight Stuff and More on New Live Disc
Columbia and Legacy are releasing a semi-new disc of live performances from Miles Davis in 2011. Bitches Brew Live is a nine-track disc that features Davis and an all-star lineup (including Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and Chick Corea) across two historic live settings. Three tracks, never released on CD, come from a performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1969; the remainder of the disc comes from the iconic performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, previously released as part of
New Order Box in the Cards?
+-, the new U.K. vinyl singles box from Joy Division, may be followed up with a New Order box set, drummer Stephen Morris said recently. In an interview with The Quietus, Morris - a member of the short-lived post-punk outfit and its post-Ian Curtis New-Wave counterpart, oversaw the remastering of the new vinyl set, which collates 10 7" singles from the band's short tenure (some of them crafted just for this box). When asked about the possibility of a similar box for New Order, he had this to
Editors Going "Unedited" with New Box Set
If you keep kicking yourself for not picking up anything by British rock group Editors, now's your chance to get it all in one buy - and then some. The Birmingham band has recently begun work on their fourth studio album, and has put together a massive compilation of nearly all of their work to date for release in February. Unedited collates the band's first three albums - 2005's The Back Room and U.K. chart-toppers An End Has a Start (2007) and In This Light and On This Evening (2009) - along
Rhino to Get Warm and Tender for Percy Sledge in New Box Set (UPDATED 11/26)
Rhino Handmade's next big title is a box set devoted to Percy Sledge's tenure with Atlantic Records. Before he was the "King of Country Soul," Sledge was an Alabama-born former hospital worker, playing with a soul combo on weekends. In 1966 he signed to Atlantic, and, following a break-up with a longtime girlfriend, recorded a simple, heartfelt single, "When a Man Loves a Woman." The impassioned, off-the-cuff delivery (an entirely honest one - Sledge improvised the lyrics on the spot) helped
New U.K. Sister Sledge Comp is Another Way to Get Your CHIC On
If you love Rhino France's new CHIC box set as much as we do here at The Second Disc HQ (expect a review up in a few days or so), here's another title you'll probably enjoy: the Music Club Deluxe label in the U.K. is releasing a new two-disc compilation for Sister Sledge. Sister Sledge, indeed comprised of Philadelphia-based sisters named Sledge (Kim, Debbi, Joni and Kathy), were a moderately successful R&B/dance group in the Atlantic label group (first signing to Atco, then Cotillion) that
New Compilation to Prove N.E.R.D is Cool
The new N.E.R.D album, Nothing, only just came out two weeks ago, but that's not stopping a new compilation due from the group early next year. Of course, there's a pretty simple reason for it: Nothing and its predecessor, Seeing Sounds (2008), were released on Universal's Interscope label. Meanwhile, the first two LPs by the band - comprised of superproducers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (better known as The Neptunes, the duo behind Wreckx-N-Effect's "Rump Shaker," Jay-Z's "I Just Wanna Love
New Live Doors Release Forthcoming
Fans of The Doors have two things to be happy about. First, outgoing Florida governor Charlie Crist is considering pardoning late frontman Jim Morrison for that little indecent exposure kerfluffle back in 1969. Second, Rhino's releasing an archival set by The Doors in two weeks. Live in Vancouver 1970 is a two-disc set capturing the band's show at the Pacific National Coliseum on June 6, 1970. The set features one very special guest: blues legend Albert King, who opened for the set and sits in
New Poison Comp is Hard to Swallow
Some of us get a bit jaded about catalogue projects sometimes. Not all of us can help it, but every now and then it doesn't hurt to stop and realize why we're so upset about a seemingly pointless compilation or repackage. That seemingly useless single-disc greatest-hits set that offers nothing new for a collector might be the entry point for a new fan into a certain artist's discography, turning them into as hardcore a fan as you and me. (And let's not forget the best-kept secret - so secret
New Tom Jones Compilation is Not Particularly Unusual
Despite the title, Greatest Hits Rediscovered, a new U.K. compilation from British heartthrob Tom Jones is pretty much what you'd expect of the man - two discs of hit singles. There are no album cuts and not a lot of glaring omissions, so if you want to get someone hooked on the Welsh singer with the big voice, this set's as good as any. Greatest Hits Rediscovered is out November 8. The track list is after the jump.
New Sinatra Box Coming from the U.K.
Another massive box set coming toward collectors from the U.K.: a set compiling all of Frank Sinatra's albums for his own Reprise Records label. Half a century after Sinatra founded it himself, The Reprise Years collates mini-paper sleeve replicas of all of Sinatra's standard albums from 1961's Ring-a-Ding Ding! to 1984's L.A. is My Lady and adds a deluxe booklet and DVD of Sinatra's A Man and His Music television specials from 1965 to 1967. Most of this material has been released before;
Dinah's Dynamic Early Singles Collected on New Box
Another set promised by Harry Weinger in his chat with The Second Disc is ready for order. The Divine Miss D! The Keynote, Decca and Mercury Singles 1943-1953 is the latest project from Hip-o Select, that collates the early songs of Dinah Washington. The Queen of the Blues began her recording career as a singer for Lionel Hampton's big band in 1943, and would earn her crown by recording a long string of singles for Mercury through the next decade. Now, for the first time in the U.S., Hip-o
