Another Chance to Visit Dave Grusin's "Mulholland Falls"

May 9, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

mulholland falls

One year before Curtis Hanson made film noir hip again with LA Confidential, director Lee Tamahori and screenwriter Pete Dexter proved that there was still a lot of life in the old form.  They assembled an all-star cast led by Nick Nolte, Chazz Palminteri, Jennifer Connelly and John Malkovich for Mulholland Falls.  The production was top-notch, with the legendary Haskell Wexler (In the Heat of the Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Thomas Crown Affair) signed as cinematographer, and

In Case You Missed It: A Full Spectrum of U.K. Compilations in May

May 4, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

The Spectrum family of labels in the U.K., which includes the catalogues of what Americans count toward Universal Music Group, have a few affordable compilations on the market in the coming month from a diverse crop of artists. On May 23, the label will release compilations from Styx as well as both Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart. (The latter two artists, whose catalogues reside with Warner Music Group in the U.S., will focus on each act's "early years.") It's also worth noting that Spectrum has

Review: Loudon Wainwright III, "40 Odd Years"

May 3, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

loudon wainwright box

Lucky for us, Loudon Wainwright III is only "so damn happy" on an infrequent basis.   The singer-songwriter-humorist-satirist-actor (is that enough of a multi-hyphenate for you?) posited the question "Is it necessary to feel like shit in order to be creative?" He arrived at the final answer "yes!" but prefaced it with "unless you're J.S. Bach." Over the course of 91 songs on four CDs and another 38-plus on DVD, Shout! Factory's new box set 40 Odd Years (82663-12189, 2011) - dig the double

UPDATE: Don't "Walk Away": Left Banke Reissues Coming from Sundazed on June 28

May 3, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

the left banke too

Today, The Left Banke is probably best known for "Walk Away Renee." A No. 5 pop hit in 1966, the song has been recorded by The Four Tops, Frankie Valli, Linda Ronstadt and Eric Carmen, to name a few, and remains a staple of oldies radio today. But was The Left Banke a mere flash in the pan, just a one-hit wonder? Far from it. Yet things have been stacked against the group for quite a while now: neither of their two original Smash LPs has ever seen CD release in America, and the definitive CD-era

Reissue Theory: John Wayne, "America, Why I Love Her"

May 2, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

america why i love her

Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, where we focus on notable albums and the reissues they could someday see. With a bold development in international relations beginning today, we look at an American actor and patriot who put his beliefs into an unusual record. Let's be honest with ourselves: I'm a music writer, first and foremost. I'm not 100 percent sure what pithy commentary I can (or should) offer on the massive news of last night - that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the

Reissue Theory: Bell Biv DeVoe, "Poison"

April 28, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

bbdv poison

Welcome to another installment of Reissue Theory, where we reflect on notable albums and the reissues they may someday see. One of the biggest R&B hits of 1990 is still an earworm today - but is there more lurking underneath the surface? The debut of Bell Biv DeVoe is reassessed. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcbMW2-Goog] Girl. I. Must. Warn youuuu...that if you listen to "Poison" by Bell Biv DeVoe one too many times, those herky-jerky New Jack beats will affix themselves to your

Even More "ICON" Titles on the Way

April 28, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

gin blossoms

Mark your calendars, friends: a new batch of ICON budget compilations are due from Universal. Between May 3 and 24, UMe is releasing a clutch of ICON sets that run the gamut from country (Willie Nelson, Hank Williams) to R&B (New Edition, Kelly Price), from classics (The Mamas & The Paps, Louis Armstrong) to modern day heroes (Gin Blossoms, Rob Zombie). As usual, there's not much in the way of brand-new or rare material, although some titles have some one-off tunes to their credit.

We're Into Something Good: ABKCO Reissues Two From Herman's Hermits In May

April 28, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

herman

"Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter."  "There's a Kind of Hush (All Over the World)."  "A Must to Avoid."  These chart hits from Herman's Hermits have stood the test of time, but how many reading this remember the films in which those songs were featured?  Upon signing to MGM Records in the U.S., Herman's Hermits were groomed for a Hollywood film career, and why not?  At the height of the group's fame, they rivaled the Beatles for popularity, even topping them as the biggest-selling pop

The Aeroplane Flies Higher: EMI Preps Three Years of Smashing Pumpkins Reissues

April 27, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

mellon collie

For Generation X, fewer names inspire emotions quite like Smashing Pumpkins. The Chicago-based alt-rock outfit, anchored primarily by singer, songwriter and sole remaining original member Billy Corgan, made rock music that was dark, atmospheric and ambitious - and yet somehow maintained commercial as well as critical success - before splintering in 2000 and reforming some six years later. While Corgan continues to lead Smashing Pumpkins through some interesting projects - he's been working on a

Review: Don Sebesky, "Giant Box"

April 25, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

giant box

Why can’t jazz be populist and pure, both at the same time?  One imagines Creed Taylor asked that question when he launched CTI (Creed Taylor Incorporated) as a solo label back in 1970.  Three years earlier he had decamped from Verve and christened the CTI name as an imprint of Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss’ A&M Records.  At A&M, Taylor produced nearly 30 albums by such jazz greats as Wes Montgomery, Montgomery's heir apparent George Benson, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Herbie Mann.  Taylor’s

Stage and Screen Classics, Reissued: "Until September" and "Camelot"

April 25, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

kl untilseptcov72

If there’s a link between Kritzerland’s two new releases, it would have to be melody.  I’m speaking of sheer, unadulterated, romantic melody, courtesy of two of music’s finest purveyors of such themes: John Barry and Frederick Loewe.  This morning, the stage and screen specialists announced two limited edition titles of 1,000, and both are notable, indeed.  From Mr. Barry comes the 1984 score to Until September, while Mr. Loewe is represented by the first-ever CD release of the 1964 Original

We Got the "Beat" Deluxe Track List

April 20, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

30th anniversary deluxe edition

When you think of the canon of rock music, it's largely a man's world, from the most legendary performers to the (theoretically, mostly) male-dominated clique of music geeks. Sure, Elvis and The Beatles wouldn't have gotten anywhere without their screaming female fans, but it took until the early '80s for girls to earn a place in the hierarchy of rock. That glass ceiling was finally shattered with Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine and Gina Schock, better known as

Robinson Is "Smokin'" On 1978 Live Set Due from Hip-o Select

smokin

The Supremes aren't the only Motown act getting a little bit of reissue love today from Hip-o Select! William “Smokey” Robinson has lived up to his nickname in a staggering seven decades now, setting the charts ablaze with particular frequency in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.  So it was with a deep catalogue already behind him – and yet more hits ahead of him – that Robinson recorded the double live album Smokin’, which arrived in stores in October 1978. Back in January, The Second Disc

Poison Double Dip with "Double Dose"

There comes a time in every music collector's life where we utter, "Another (name of artist) compilation?!" The time has come to put Poison in those parentheses; their latest collection is due in stores on May 3. Double Dose: Ultimate Hits does have a lot of worthy material for new fans. In addition to collating all the band's notable singles, it includes a fair amount of album cuts and at least one or two non-LP tracks that were scooped up on reissues or prior compilations. Hip-o Select Preps Supremes' Final Sessions

April 19, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

supremes final

The wait is over: Hip-o Select has finally anthologized the last years of one of Motown's most beloved groups - The Supremes - in their newest limited-edition set. Let Yourself Go: The '70s Albums, Vol. 2 1974-1977 - The Final Sessions fills in part of the story that hardcore Supremes fans know - that the group didn't just disappear when Diana Ross embarked on her stunning solo career. Jean Terrell replaced Ross on lead vocals on five Supremes LPs between 1970 and 1972. This era saw the last of

"What's New?" Ronstadt and Riddle Classic Revisited on Gold CD

whats new

While the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has inexplicably remained immune to her charms, few artists have had the career of Linda Ronstadt.  She's racked up 38 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including ten that went Top Ten. On the album chart, she's placed 36 entries, including ten that reached the Top Ten there too (her magic number!) and three that hit pole position.  And consider this: after playing a vital role in the country-rock scene with the Stone Poneys and their hit recording of Mike

"Would You Believe" The Complete Hollies 1963-1968 Is Coming From EMI?

Fans of the Hollies have lately had plenty of items on their wish lists, thanks to recent releases from the Sundazed and BGO labels. Yes, it’s been quite a year in catalogue terms for the lads from Manchester! EMI’s U.K. arm continues the celebration with the May 9 release of one whopper of a box set. The Clarke, Hicks & Nash Years (what about Bobby Elliott? Just askin’!) is subtitled The Complete Hollies: April 1963 – October 1968, and if this is somewhat of a fallacy, it’s more or less the

Exciting news seems to be developing for fans of singer/songwriter/pianist Ben Folds: he recently tweeted a picture taken at his Nashville home of what appears to be the beginning of some research for an archival project. A Dozen "Playlist" Sets Due in May

April 14, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

playlist metal

Love 'em or hate 'em, the various budget compilations that come from the major labels are quick, easy ways to get catalogue material out to the masses. Universal's ICON and Sony's Playlist series are probably the highest-profile of these series, but the latter is arguably the more beloved of the two, thanks to a concerted effort by some of the producers at Legacy to get rarer tracks on the Playlist discs, whether it's a rare single version or bonus track from a previous reissue. Legacy has 12

Less is more, they tell you. If a song like "Yesterday" was done with a full band, would it have retained its emotional impact than its original, heartrending arrangement? Now, that argument often rings true, but sometimes a little more is pretty fun, too. Anyone who enjoys the music of the 1980s can attest to this. Some of the best hits of that decade were flush with production techniques and overdubs that would have been shunned in decades past. The synthesizer and the drum machine became the

Crossing the Pond: "London American Label 1963" Spotlights Spector and More

April 14, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

london american 1963

It’s 1963. Imagine a label that counted Roy Orbison, Darlene Love, James Brown, The Drifters and Jerry Lee Lewis all among its artists. While such an array of talent never convened under one roof in America, it was a very different story in the United Kingdom. The U.K.’s  Decca Record Company indeed brought all of those artists, and more, under the umbrella of its London American label. London American delivered the best in American pop, R&B and rock and roll to British audiences. Ace is
