Dedicated Follower of Kinksdom: BBC Sessions Box Coming For The Kinks [UPDATED 5/29 WITH TRACK LISTING]

May 29, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

kinks at the bbc

Another Kinks-size box is on the way. Following the recent, well-received series of deluxe album reissues and the limited-edition Kinks in Mono box set, Universal U.K. and Sanctuary Records have announced the latest project celebrating the quintessentially English rockers.  Due on August 13, the 5-CD/1-DVD box set The Kinks at the BBC isn't the first survey of the band's BBC live recordings, but it's by far the most comprehensive.  It has been compiled from all of the existing recordings made

Review: Paul and Linda McCartney, "The Paul McCartney Archive Collection: Ram"

May 23, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

ram box set2

Paul McCartney might have taken the bull by the horns for his aggressively homemade solo debut McCartney in 1970, defying practically all expectations, but he literally took the ram by the horns on the cover photo of its 1971 follow-up, Ram.  By the time of Ram's release, George Harrison had declared that All Things (including Beatles) Must Pass and John Lennon had exorcised many of his demons with the confessional Plastic Ono Band, wife Yoko at his side.  With Linda McCartney co-billed as

Needles and Pins: Searchers Box Set Finally Back on Schedule

May 15, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

searchers hearts in their eyes

Back on July 26, 2010, we reported on Sweets, Spice, Sugar, Pins and Needles, a 4-CD, 120-track boxed retrospective dedicated to The Searchers, the second-most famous band to emerge from Liverpool during the British Invasion!  We wrote: One of the best and most successful bands to come out of Liverpool, The Searchers may have toiled in the shadow of that other band from Liverpool, but hits like “Sugar and Spice,” “Pins and Needles” and “When You Walk in the Room” remain some of the strongest

A Brief Note on MusicTAP

May 8, 2012 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

tap logo small

On a typical day, longtime readers of The Second Disc would do well (if you aren't already) to check out Matt Rowe's excellent MusicTAP site. It's harder to imagine a bigger music fan than Matt, who's got a knack for posting great, thought-provoking pieces on favorite albums, artists and genres and is a valuable asset to any music enthusiast's online conversations. It's safe to say that without his spirit, there might have never have been the impetus to start The Second Disc, so for that, we

Ram On: Paul McCartney Archive Collection's "Ram" Coming In May [UPDATED WITH FULL TRACK LISTING AND DETAILS]

May 4, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

thrillington

We're gonna keep this one short and sweet, dear boys and long-haired ladies.  Yes, the oft-rumored Paul McCartney Archive Collection of Paul and Linda McCartney's 1971 album Ram is very close to becoming a reality.  On March 22, it was officially announced that Ram will be reissued in multiple formats on May 22.  But one of those formats will be a bit surprising to collectors of previous Archive Collection titles.  It appears that Ram will not follow the hardcover book format of those past

Not Too Late: Norah Jones Box Set Due On SACD, Vinyl

May 3, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

norah jones box

Much has always been made of the success rate of Grammy recipients in the Best New Artist category, with some artists damning the prize as a curse.  While some winners have, indeed, been unable to match their initial success, the list of winners also includes such long-running artists as Tom Jones, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, and Sheryl Crow plus unlikely but distinguished names like Bob Newhart and Marvin Hamlisch, and a little band known as The Beatles! One more recent

Made for You and Me: American Legend Woody Guthrie Chronicled in New Box Set

May 2, 2012 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

woody 100 box set

Fewer figures cast a larger shadow in American folk music than Woodrow Wilson Guthrie. The Oklahoman singer/songwriter's contribution to the fabric of our nation's sound is innumerable; from Dylan to Springsteen, any songwriter worth their salt in depicting the life, livelihood and dreams of our country owes Woody Guthrie a strong debt. With this in mind, Smithsonian Folkways will release a new career-spanning Guthrie box set this summer, in honor of what would have been his 100th

Short Takes: Musicians Talking About Their Reissues

May 1, 2012 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

It's rare when musicians do any amount of press on reissues, usually because they've got bigger things to worry about or are deceased. So the notion that some of the people behind three major catalogue campaigns have all had something notable to say in the past few days is certainly worth the attention of any catalogue fan: Johnny Marr gave an extensive interview with The Onion's AV Club about his memories of The Smiths as filtered through the assemblage and release of Rhino's The Smiths

Rock fans have a nice surprise coming to them if they check out the soundtrack to the highly-anticipated Marvel Comics blockbuster The Avengers, opening this week: "Live to Rise," the first all-new single from grunge pioneers Soundgarden since their 2010 reunion. It's a promising sign of life from the group, who are slated to release their latest full-length LP later this year. To commemorate that flurry of activity, Universal Music Group is releasing in Europe a special box set of the group's

cilla lp

What's it all about, Cilla? Though "Alfie" and "Anyone Who Had a Heart" are very much the property of Ms. Dionne Warwick in the United States, Liverpool's Cilla Black can fairly stake claim to them across the pond.  Born Priscilla Maria Veronica White, the protégé of Brian Epstein and close Beatle pal scored a string of beloved hit singles at the height of Swinging London, though her profile has long remained under the radar in America.  Well, not if The Second Disc has anything to say about

the complete beat

In what is quite possibly the first such occurrence since The Second Disc opened up shop in 2010, one popular ska band from England is getting two very different sets of catalogue reissues in their native land as well as the United States. The Beat - known as The English Beat in North America - were among the top bands of the late-'70s/early-'80s ska revival in England. With an eclectic lineup (Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger sharing lead vocals, Andy Cox on guitar, bassist David Steele,

How lucky can one guy be?  Although Dean Martin's exhaustive catalogue has been definitively anthologized on four massive box sets released by Germany's Bear Family label between 1997 and 2001, unheard material from the King of Cool continues to be discovered.  Reporting in February 2011 about the then-recent Cool Then, Cool Now 2-CD/book box set, this writer opined: "A true career retrospective box with material from each label and era would be essential for those Martin fans looking for more

In a statement, the site's founder, Stephane, announced a desire to pursue "a few other personal projects in mind (unrelated to Morrissey)" but was still taking suggestions as to "what to do with the body." Get It On: Marc Bolan Goes Super Deluxe with T. Rex "Electric Warrior," 2-CD, 1-CD Versions Also Available [UPDATED]

April 11, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

electric warrior deluxe1

Before David Bowie was Ziggy Stardust, Marc Bolan was the Electric Warrior. A major turning point in the glam-rock revolution of the U.K., the Electric Warrior album (1971) effectively buried the psychedelic folk rock of Tyrannosaurus Rex and immortalized the trashy hard rock of T. Rex. True, one successful single (“Ride a White Swan”) and eponymous album had already introduced the T. Rex name in 1970, and the single “Hot Love” first boasted the expanded band line-up of Bolan, Mickey Finn, Steve
