March 1, 2023 By Joe Marchese 6 Comments

Stephen Stills Live in Berkeley 1971

On June 30, 1971, Stephen Stills released his second solo album.  The simply-titled Stephen Stills 2 peaked within the top ten of the Billboard Top LPs chart and yielded two singles ("Change Partners" and "Marianne") which peaked just outside of the top 40 on the Hot 100.  Stills set off on his first solo tour in support of the album and brought along The Memphis Horns, the brass section which had played on the LP.  Today, Omnivore Recordings and Iconic Artists Group have announced the April 28

Marc Almond Open All Night

Cherry Red is continuing its longtime association with singer-songwriter Marc Almond on a new, deluxe 3-CD edition of his 1999 album Open All Night.  While not his most commercially successful record, it remains one of his most beloved for its compelling blend of the many styles that informed his music.  This new release, on Cherry Red's SFE imprint, expands the original LP with demos, alternate versions, live tracks, and more.  SFE previously reissued Open All Night as a 2-CD set in 2010; this

First Time: 7a Records Reissues Macy Gray's Jazz Gem "Stripped" on CD and Vinyl

February 23, 2023 By The Second Disc 3 Comments

Macy Gray Stripped

In April 2016, Macy Gray entered an old church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to record one of the most distinctive albums of her career.  Stripped, originally released on the Chesky Records label, matched the R&B diva with a jazz quartet.  On original songs, favorites from her discography, and unexpected covers alike, Gray's smoky rasp took full flight.  On March 17, 7a Records - the label best-known for its deep dives into the world of The Monkees - reissues Stripped for the very first time on

Random Access Memories packshot

Fans of French electronic duo Daft Punk may have been shocked when the group suddenly announced their dissolution at the start of 2021. But the robots haven't really powered down: a year later, they digitally expanded debut album Homework for its 25th anniversary, compiled an album of remixes from the era, and even showed off some limited, never-before-seen footage from an early concert following Homework's release (which shockingly showed members Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter

Yesterday, BMG announced the latest feather in its ever-growing cap: an agreement to bring the solo recordings of George Harrison to the label as part of its reactivation of the late Beatle's own Dark Horse Records label.  With Harrison's publishing already under the BMG umbrella, the deal unites Harrison's recording and publishing.  To mark the occasion - and to commemorate what would have been Harrison's 80th birthday on Saturday, February 25 - BMG has released his solo discography in Dolby

Just My Salvation: Vinyl Me, Please Collects Best of Stax's Gospel Truth in New Box Set

February 21, 2023 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Best of Gospel Truth

When Memphis' Stax Records launched its Gospel Truth imprint in 1972, its mission was simple: to "carry the message of today's gospel to the people on the street."  The label's Al Bell worked closely with in-house radio guru/producer/songwriter Dave Clark and staffer Mary Peak Paterson to afford Gospel Truth the same level of promotion as Stax's secular releases, and accessibility was the byword.  Bell paired traditional gospel talents with young artists well-versed in rock, funk, blues, and

Dionne Warwick Complete Scepter Singles

From the moment she burst onto the music scene in 1962 exhorting "Don't Make Me Over," Dionne Warwick has been a musical force with which to be reckoned.  The legendary singer blended elegant pop and deeply felt soul in a fashion which remains unrivaled today for its sophistication and polish; her signature songs such as "Walk On By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Alfie," and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" have all become cornerstones of the new American songbook. Paul Williams Reprise Singles

He might have been born a someday man, but Paul Williams has proven himself to be a forever artist.  A modern-day renaissance man, the Nebraska native tried his luck as an actor, a songwriter, and a singer from his earliest days in Los Angeles.  A brief three-month stint peddling his tunes at The Turtles' home of White Whale Records ended in disappointment when Williams was shown the door.  But he didn't have to wait long for a new opportunity.  A friend played his songs for Herb Alpert and

I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston

February 13, 2023 By

Whitney Houston I Go to the Rock

This new collection gathers together 14 hymns and spirituals recorded by the late Whitney Houston. Most of the songs stem from soundtracks, one of the few places she flexed her muscles within the genre (on 1992's juggernaut The Bodyguard and more notably on 1996's The Preacher's Wife); six of the tracks are previously unreleased, and at least one was recorded in 1981, before Houston signed a deal with Clive Davis' Arista Records. The set also includes a stirring cover of Simon & Garfunkel's

One of the biggest omissions in hip-hop digital catalogue history is finally being corrected next month - and it comes alongside some news of what it'll sound like and a deeply ironic tragedy concerning the group in question. On March 3, the first six albums by rap trio De La Soul - 1989's landmark debut 3 Feel High and Rising, De La Soul is Dead (1991), Buhloone Mindstate (1993), Stakes is High (1996), Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump (2001) and AOI: Bionix (2001) - will finally be

A New Testament: Whitney Houston Gospel Collection Announced

February 10, 2023 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

Whitney Houston I Go to the Rock

Whitney Houston's skills as an R&B and pop singer made her a blockbuster act in the '80s and '90s, but the late singer had a deep, familial passion for gospel that she only partially explored during her too-brief career. A new compilation and documentary due in March will change that. I Go to the Rock: The Gospel Music of Whitney Houston is a new 14-track collection featuring hymns and spirituals Houston recorded throughout her time as a professional singer. Most of the songs stem from
