Though Heroes and Villains is the title of Grapefruit's new 3-CD anthology chronicling The Sound of Los Angeles 1965-68, that famous Beach Boys song isn't among its 90 selections. Not that Brian Wilson and co. are absent; the compilation instead presents another SMiLE tune, "Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock)" as part of its portrait of a place and time in music history when it truly seemed anything was possible. U.K.-based compiler David Wells persuasively makes the case here that L.A.
Welcome to this week's Release Round-Up! Peter Gabriel, Rated PG (Real World) CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada Last year, Peter Gabriel issued Rated PG, a collection of one-off songs he'd performed for motion pictures across his solo career. On June 12, Real Gone Music will dig into the '60s underground with a pair of exciting vinyl releases. The first is a reissue of The Electric Prunes' Release of an Oath. By the time the album was released in 1968, the band - known for "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)" - featured none of its original members, yet two key players in the band's success remained: engineer-producer Dave Hassinger and composer-arranger extraordinaire David Axelrod. It's said that Axelrod's complex

Tim Buckley, Live at the Troubadour - 2-LP 12" Clear Vinyl First appearing on CD in 1994, this album is drawn from Tim Buckley's September 3 and September 4, 1969 shows at West Hollywood's famed Troubadour. Tim Buckley's September 1969 concerts at Doug Weston's famed Troubadour were first compiled for release in 1994 as Live at the Troubadour, capturing the singer-songwriter holding sway over an intimate Hollywood crowd. The performances took place just a couple of months after the July release of his third studio album, Happy Sad, and another couple of months before the November release of his fourth LP, Blue Afternoon. Now, Manifesto Records in the U.S. and Edsel in the U.K. have revisited

Five decades ago, in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, a social movement was growing. Young people, with heads full of progressive ideas and evolving attitudes toward sex, drugs and rock and roll, were converging on the area to celebrate their personal freedom--an extension of that January's "Human Be-In" in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The "Summer of Love," as it was called, was the birth of the modern counterculture, and music played an integral role in the shaping,
It's not even Memorial Day yet, but we're already looking ahead to the heart of summer for upcoming reissues and now we've got Real Gone's slate due just after Independence Day on July 7. You've already heard the news about Second Disc Records and Real Gone's A Little Magic, A Little Kindness from Laura Nyro, with notes by our very own Joe Marchese, but Joe's notes are also featured in two other Real Gone releases in

The music of the late Tim Buckley is about to take flight again on Wings - The Complete Singles 1966-1974 from Omnivore Recordings. Due for release on November 18, Wings presents the A- and B-sides of all ten singles issued from his nine albums, plus one previously unreleased track originally slated for an unissued 45. In short, this 21-track anthology promises to provide a powerful introduction to the genre-bending, envelope-pushing artist. Hailing from bucolic Orange County, California by
Ever feel like all the fancy bonus content and packaging on some reissues totally overshadows the music? Rhino's European division must've felt so, too: they released a handful of Original Album Series boxes a few weeks ago, featuring a lot of music with a minimum of frills and a relatively low price. The titles - five albums by one artist, housed in mini-LP cardboard sleeves and put into a box - are the ideal quick, easy discography builder for new fans or collectors with a few notable gaps on
One of the biggest negatives about the Rhino Records catalogue in recent years is that the label's Handmade titles are generally limited to Rhino's website. Reissues and limited box sets by Hip-o Select and Legacy will easily find their way on the shelves at any forward-thinking independent record store, but with Rhino, it seems harder to come by. Thanks to a rising star among indie record labels, that may be about to change. Rhino has announced a distribution deal with Light in the Attic
When Tim Buckley is discussed today, it's most often in the context of his son Jeff, and the eerie similarities between the lives of father and son, both of whom died at tragically young ages. So Rhino Handmade's expanded two-CD remaster of Tim Buckley's debut (Rhino Handmade RHM2 526087, 2011) isn't just a celebration of a folk-rock classic, but a stunning reminder of his talent on its own considerable merits. Tim Buckley's eponymous debut remains a haunting work by a haunted man. Yet like
Queen, Greatest Hits / Greatest Hits II (Island/UMe) Queen's 40th anniversary celebration kicks in the U.K. off with a new remaster of the band's first two greatest hits compilations on the band's new label in England, Island Records. (The music of Queen is still licensed by Disney's Hollywood Records in the U.S.) Remastered and expanded studio albums will follow later in the year, which American fans will also have to import. Rhino is releasing Tim Buckley's debut album for Elektra next week, sources confirm. Buckley was all of 19 years old when he recorded his debut LP in 1966 with Elektra founder Jac Holzman co-producing and a stunningly strong group of session players backing him up (Lee Underwood on guitar, Jim Fielder of Blood, Sweat and Tears on bass, Van Dyke Parks on piano and Mothers of Invention drummer Billy Mundi). Though critics never gave him scores of attention, he is now widely regarded as one of the
