Paul Rutherford Says "Oh World" Once More

March 7, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

oh world 2cd

Since The Second Disc has started, we've seen some pretty neat catalogue projects tied to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, namely reissues of the band's original two LPs from ZTT/Salvo and a 12" remix compilation featuring rare tracks from the band. Cherry Pop has another FTGH-oriented catalogue project coming out in U.K. next week. Oh World was the first LP by Paul Rutherford, known as a backing vocalist and dancer with Frankie (and one of the two openly gay members of the band). In 1989, not long

telefon

We've got some soundtrack news from all over the place to share with you today. Film Score Monthly has prepped its latest release, a double-premiere of dramatic scores by Lalo Schifrin (for the 1977 Charles Bronson thriller Telefon) and Leonard Rosenman (for the 1980 James Caan vehicle Hide in Plain Sight). Rosenman's score is particularly notable on this disc, as almost none of it ended up in the final film. This set is limited to 2,000 copies. The label has also announced their next few

teddy cowboy hat

Here's a music DVD treat for you: Shout! Factory is releasing a live show from the vaults of the late, great Teddy Pendergrass. The former lead singer of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes was in rare form in this show recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon in early 1982. The soul serenader had already racked up five consecutive platinum records between 1975 and 1980 - one with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and four on his own - and had recently enjoyed his latest Top 5 R&B hit,

Details for U2's latest fan-club release have been announced, and the band is bringing some very special guests for this disc. U2 Duals, continuing a tradition of fan-club releases that have included special CD singles, remix albums and vintage live shows, collates some of the group's most notable duets. From "When Love Comes to Town," the 1988 single featuring B.B. King, to a live show this past November with a guest appearance by Jay-Z, U2 have gotten around with multiple collaborators

The Name Was Barry

January 31, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

john barry

It is with a heavy heart that I pass along to you the news that film composer John Barry died on Sunday. Barry, a five-time Oscar winner, is of course best known for his work on 12 of the 22 James Bond films. Though his authorship of the iconic theme is under dispute even after a U.K. court ruled that it was Dr. No composer Monty Norman's work alone, Barry is still the name most synonymous with Bond music, and crafted some of the series' best themes. The timing of Barry's passing comes at an

A few small notes that trickled out of the pipeline on Friday: Pearl Jam have confirmed that there are more reissues forthcoming from their extensive discography, to commemorate their 20th anniversary. The Seattle rockers, who reissued landmark debut Ten (1991) as a Legacy Edition in 2009 and will release a live anthology, Live on Ten Legs, later this month, are planning similar deluxe sets for Vs. With plenty of people back at their jobs today, The Second Disc HQ is back online, ready for another year of continuous catalogue coverage! We're expecting some great titles in the not-too-distant future, plus a lot of surprises, too. I know I'm excited, and I'm sure many of you are too. More ZTT and All That

December 24, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

salvodcd2132

Not only is a deluxe edition of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Liverpool prepped for February 2011, but another vault-clearing compilation is on the way from the ZTT label. Zang Tuum Tumb and The Art of the 12" is two discs' worth of rare or unreleased dance cuts from the best acts to ever grace the roster from 1983 to 1989 or so: Frankie, Propaganda, Art of Noise, 808 State and plenty more. It's also got a handful of those distinctively ZTT short tracks that ended up on the odd single from time

John Barleycorn Must Be Expanded

December 23, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

john barleycorn deluxe

Well, at least it will be expanded. Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die (1970) is coming out as a double-disc deluxe edition in February. Originally intended as Steve Winwood's first solo album after the dissolution of Blind Faith, John Barleycorn became a reunion project for Traffic and spawned several well-known songs including "Glad" and "Empty Pages." It was also the highest-charting album of Traffic's career in the U.S., hitting No. 5. A previous reissue in the U.K. in 1999 added two

Back Tracks: The Clash

December 22, 2010 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Where were you when you first heard The Clash? If you can't answer that question because you've never heard them, then consider this your Christmas present. The London-based punk band accomplished much in their decade-long tenure, including some of the best albums of the genre. Though they enjoyed the fruits of a major label, they stayed true to their ethos, keeping prices low for albums, tickets and souvenirs (reportedly, the band forfeited royalties on sprawling triple-album Sandinista! in
